Ender Lilies Quietus of the Knights

Much like in Hollow Knight, the tale revolves around how a vast kingdom came to be destroyed by a torrential deluge known as the Rain of Death.

In the fast-paced platforming and Souls-like fighting of this game, players can customize their playstyle by combining abilities and equipping secret relics to their liking.

Metroid Dread

Nintendo Switch as a gaming console

We decided to shed a light on one of Nintendo’s lesser-known franchises, Metroid Dread, which recently received a new addition in the form of Metroid Dread.

Intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran returns to investigate a mystery signal on Planet ZDR before understanding it’s a trap in this new game.

Players will have to hunt or be hunted as they navigate a large maze of tunnels reminiscent of Hallownest on a faraway planet overtaken by violent aliens and savage robots named E.M.M.I.

For those who enjoyed Hollow Knight’s challenging learning curve, Metroid Dread is sure to be a rewarding challenge.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

The following are the available platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS

Metroidvania received a fitting sequel in the form of Koji Igarashi’s modified Castlevania formula in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a worthy successor to Metroidvania’s namesake.

Like Hollow Knight, Symphony of the Night takes inspiration from classic Castlevania games like Hollow Knight while also introducing current elements to keep things fresh.

Miriam, an orphan who endured a series of alchemical experiments as a kid that gained her extraordinary talents, is the focus of this 18th-century English tale.

In the same way that the Knight’s weapons and skills may be improved, Miriam can get new abilities that open up previously hidden locations and techniques for defeating an array of otherworldly foes.

Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight

Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Macintosh

A hardcore action-platformer with battle and exploration like Hollow Knight’s Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is next.

Kaho, a priestess whose cursed hamlet is on the verge of extinction, seeks for the Queen of the land to save it before it’s too late in this game.

However, time is running out as the village is progressively being overtaken by corrupted creatures.

Fast-paced combat with a focus on melee combos, accurate dodges, and the use of various items and spells to destroy adversaries are all hallmarks of this game’s gameplay.

Unsighted

XBox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows

Rain World

Windows, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch are all supported platforms.

Rain World, a terrific action-platformer set in a crumbling mega-structure, is often overlooked in favor of more well-known Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight.

You’ll have to be on the lookout for larger predators who are higher up the food chain as you travel the earth in search of secrets and your next meal.

With its punishing difficulties and gruesome landscapes, the game is similar to Hollow Knight in that it features open-ended exploration and a wealth of in-game information.

Players with patience and attention to detail can get far in the game despite its convoluted objectives and single-hit kills.

Axiom Verge 2

Windows, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch are all supported platforms.

Thomas Happ’s retro-inspired Metroidvania Axiom Verge 2 is one of the best independent games on Nintendo Switch, alongside Hollow Knight.

Similar to its predecessor, the game takes on a very sci-fi-centric tone that includes plenty of atmospheric environments rendered in NES-style pixel art.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

There is a sci-fi feel to the game that contains a lot of dramatic settings presented in the NES-style graphics of its predecessor.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps review – monsters and magic stir in the forest | Games | The Guardian

Just like the spooky and enthralling Hollow Knight, the landscape of this game is filled with meticulously designed environments that grow throughout the course of the plot.

The game has a steep learning curve like many of the other titles on this list, but we’d bet Hollow Knight aficionados are up for the challenge.

Dead Cells

Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Macintosh

Anyone who wants more Hollow Knight should check out Dead Cells, as long as you don’t mind playing in a roguelite style.

What you play is a mystery life form that takes over the corpse of the deceased so that they might traverse an expansive labyrinth that is rife with dangerous creatures and traps.

Though Dead Cells has a lot of unpredictability in its design, its level design and loot drops remain consistent.

Because of this, it’s much simpler to concentrate on the game’s main meat: its hard combat and permadeath features, which remove all of your items upon death.

Salt and Sanctuary

Windows, PlayStation 4, Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Macintosh are all supported.

Taking cues from Dark Souls’ punishing combat and eerie ambience, Hollow Knight isn’t the first or last independent game to do so.

Despite striking visual and tonal similarities, Salt and Sanctuary was released a year before it.

Metroidvanias, in general, are known for their open-ended exploration and extensive backtracking.

To put it simply, Salt and Sanctuary has a lot more options for players to create unique builds that take into account the varied beginning classes.

La-Mulana 2

SteamWorld Dig 2

Windows, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch are all supported platforms.

SteamWorld Dig 2 replaces the Knight’s Nail with a pickaxe and asks you to locate the game’s protagonist when they inexplicably vanish.

A labyrinthine mine system traversing numerous biomes, each with its own unique enemy types, hazards, and materials awaits you as you play as Dorothy McCrank.

Open-ended exploration is a big part of the pleasure of Hollow Knight. There are numerous caverns and treasures to be found as well as self-contained dungeons to explore.

When a player has a sufficient amount of resources, they can spend them to improve Dorothy’s equipment and gain access to additional weapons like the grappling hook and the sticky grenade launcher.

Sundered

Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Macintosh

Sundered is a hand-drawn 2D Metroidvania inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft that takes place in a dark and hazardous atmosphere.

In this game, you play as an eldritch warrior stranded in an ever-shifting maze of tunnels, where you must choose whether or not to use the monsters’ abilities.

While exploring procedurally generated and handcrafted levels, you’ll have access to a wealth of upgrade and build options that can be used in conjunction with each other.

Metroidvania-style aspects are incorporated into its gameplay loop, allowing players to return to previously completed sections after gaining particular powers.

Chasm

Windows, PlayStation 4, Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Macintosh are all supported.

Next up is Chasm, an indie Metroidvania that has you exploring an underground mine where the occupants inexplicably vanished before the advent of scary monsters, which you’ll have to battle.

For the Kingdom to be restored to its grandeur, you’ll have to fight your way past gangs of adversaries and explore the ancient catacombs in search of clues and equipment that will aid you.

For this, the game uses procedural generation to establish the layout of its map, while each area is handcrafted.

The Metroidvania-style exploration and progression in Chasm is dependent on acquiring new weapons, tools, and spells, like in Hollow Knight. Chasm contains six distinct biomes.

Valdis Story: Abyssal City

Windows and Mac OS X

In addition to Abyssal City, another Metroidvania that gets missed because of its punishingly high difficulty, there’s also Valdis Story: Abyssal City.

Players take control of one of four playable characters as they traverse a large, interconnected world packed with dangerous foes.

There are a variety of melee weapons and magic spells to choose from in the game’s combat system, which is heavily reliant on combinations and precision attacks.

Valdis Story, like Hollow Knight, features environmental riddles and gated places that force players to go backwards after gaining new powers.

Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night

Igarashi, who worked on several of the best-known Castlevania games of the past, is a big part of the “vania” portion of “metroidvania.” After leaving Konami, he returned to the genre with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a Kickstarter project.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night trên Steam

A modern spin on classic Castlevania design features ensures that Bloodstained feels fresh and new at the same time, while still drawing inspiration from its predecessors. Hollow Knight is a love letter to the Castlevania games of the past that is sure to please metroidvania aficionados everywhere.

Celeste

Veteran players will tell you that Hollow Knight’s infamous Path of Pain is a fitting name for the game’s most difficult platforming challenge. With a staggering amount of deadly buzz saws, unfathomable death pits, and other perilous obstacles, only the strongest players will be able to complete the Path.

Celeste, a smash successful indie game, is like if the Path of Pain were turned into a full-length game. In the end, we have one of the most delightful 2D platformers in recent memory, despite the fact that it is quite difficult. Players’ reflexes and response times will be tested to the maximum as they progress through the game, which will provide them with increasingly precise tasks.

Dark Souls

Although the phrase “It’s the Dark Souls of X” has grown stale in recent years, it is nevertheless an accurate description of Hollow Knight, a game that intentionally draws inspiration from Dark Souls and other so-called “soulslike” games. As with other Souls games, Hollow Knight’s respawn system forces players to return where they died in order to reclaim their soul and money.

Dark Souls-inspired elements like the gloomy mood and open-ended exploration in Hollow Knight are also apparent in the game’s cryptic narrative. Some of the endings in Hollow Knight share some similarities to those in Dark Souls, however spoilers are out of the question.

Hyper Light Drifter

However, despite the fact that Hyper Light Drifter has a science fiction visual and a top-down camera perspective, Hollow Knight’s design principles may be found in the game’s design.

An abandoned science fiction world awaits exploration in Hyper Light Drifter. The player assumes the role of an unarmed wanderer, armed only with their blaster and their sword. As with Hollow Knight, Hyper Light Drifter has a unique blend of exploration through the ruins of a long-gone civilization with fast-paced, difficult combat.

Shovel Knight

A love letter to the 8 and 16-bit era’s action platformers, Shovel Knight is clearly inspired by the classic Mega Man and Castlevania games from the NES. When it comes down to it, Shovel Knight does an excellent job of capturing the look and feel of games from that time period while still delivering thrilling side-scrolling action and epic boss battles.

Due to Shovel Knight’s emphasis on melee combat, Hollow Knight gamers should have no problem taking on the various adversaries and bosses that Shovel Knight has to offer (this time with shovels instead of nails, though). Like the Knight in Hollow Knight, the Shovel Knight can even pogo on top of adversaries with his shovel!

Cave Story

Hollow Knight and Cave Story are indie metroidvanias with a focus on battle and exploration that are both fast-paced and fun to play. Players in Cave Story must explore a massive underground civilization while taking out hordes of opponents and monsters along the way. Experimenting with new weapons and power-ups is exhilarating, and the controls are responsive enough to keep the gameplay exciting.

Though Cave Story can be purchased on Steam and most modern platforms, the best part is that it’s still free to play from its original freeware website. Even yet, Hollow Knight fans owe it to themselves to check out this game, especially since it’s completely free to play.

Dead Cells

Devoted to both the exploration of a metroidvania and the compulsive replayability of a roguelike, Dead Cells is a wonderful amalgamation of both genres. Hollow Knight and metroidvania aficionados alike will recognize the 2D combat and gated exploration, but the RPG components and roguelike twist keep the experience unique.

A permadeath mechanic in Dead Cells forces the player to re-enter the dungeon without their weapons and equipment when they die. This may appear harsh, but it really adds to the game’s appeal by making it more difficult to put down once a player has lost their character.

Super Metroid

Super Metroid is the paradigmatic masterpiece of the metroidvania genre, widely recognized as one of, if not the finest, ever developed. As a result of its distinctive atmosphere, intriguing power-ups, and captivating location and exploration, it has earned a place among the finest video games ever made, despite its advancing age.

Hollow Knight unashamedly wears its Metroid influences on its sleeve, copying many of the design principles introduced in the series’ classic installments. Power-ups and a large underground map are examples of this. You owe it to yourself to play Super Metroid if you haven’t already, because it’s a fantastic game.

Mega Man Zero

The frenzied melee fighting in Hollow Knight is legendary, with players constantly weaving in and out of opposing attack patterns in search of an opening to strike. In addition to being a triumph of 2D combat and an homage to the legendary Mega Man Zero series, this is a thrilling, grueling, and rewarding experience.

Mega Man Zero 1

When compared to Hollow Knight’s gameplay, Mega Man Zero is the most reminiscent, because to its fast-paced gameplay, frequent boss encounters, and emphasis on physical fighting. Hollow Knight aficionados will feel right at home in Mega Man, as Zero has a reputation for being extremely challenging.
