Space dogfighting shooter Elite Dangerous takes place in the 34th century, where mankind has branched out into other galaxies.

The goal of the game is to move around the LV-426 colony and shoot any Aliens you come across. You must, however, switch between six characters and guide them all the way to the end of the game.

It’s no wonder that this game is notoriously difficult, given that there are far over 200 rooms to explore. LV-426, a fan-created remake of the original, was released in 2010 and has since become a cult classic.

While the third film in the Alien franchise was a letdown, Alien: Isolation was anything but.

Playing as Ripley in a run and gun shooter, you’ll be tasked with rescuing hostages and closing off alien entrances in a series of timed levels. Alien 3 is one of the most difficult games of the era, but it’s an excellent movie adaption.

Alien 3 received positive reviews across the board, regardless of the manner in which it was distributed. SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis versions were particularly impressive, with Sega Force awarding it a 92% rating and All Game giving the SNES version a rating of 4/5.

For an 11-year-old system, Alien 3 had very fluid animation and gameplay, especially considering how much of an improvement in graphics it had over its predecessors. However, there was a version for the Game Boy that was drastically different from the other versions, favoring a top down viewpoint.

Alien: Resurrection

Alien Resurrection is based on the controversial fourth film in the Alien series.

Alien Resurrection, another long-delayed first-person shooter, was released in 2000, three years after the 1997 film. A top-down shooter like Loaded, Resurrection was initially intended to be. Following the success of the Tomb Raider franchise, the game switched to a third-person perspective adventure game and subsequently became an FPS.

Aliens Resurrection received mixed reviews, but it’s worth a second look because it was one of the first games that use both analog sticks simultaneously. For the first time, a modern controller setup with analog sticks manipulating both the character and their view point is used in an FPS game.

Both Edge and PSM praised the game with an 8/10 and a 7/10, respectively.

Alien 3: The Gun

Alien vs Predator (1994)

Capcom ruled the scrolling beat-em-up genre in the 1990s. In 1994, Capcom published this two-player (or three-player on some cabinets) beat-em-up into arcades following the success of Final Fight.

Capcom took liberties with the Alien universe in the same way that the Aliens arcade cabinet did, but this wasn’t based on a straight movie, so they could do whatever they wanted. Punch, kick, and blast your way through the game’s numerous stages as either two predators, two cyborg soldiers, or a mix of both.

Aliens vs. Predator, on the other hand, did not get a home video conversion. The name of the game was on the SNES a year earlier, but it wasn’t the same game. Heavy.com and Kotaku both rank the game as one of the best beat-em-ups of all time, while the game itself is considered by many to be one of the most visually stunning games of the 16-bit era.

After eight years of waiting, Capcom says that Aliens against Predator is one of their most requested remakes, although the game hasn’t been re-released. Because of license concerns, it’s safe to presume that won’t happen.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite

There are few games that feel like an apology for Aliens: Colonial Marines more than Aliens: Fireteam Elite, the newest entry on this list. There are many reasons for this, chief among them being the style of Fireteam Elite, which, in comparison with Alien: Isolation, attempts to emulate the look and feel of the classic film with good horror gameplay.

You and your comrades assume the roles of Colonial Marines and battle Xenomorphs in a series of stages and waves. In Fireteam Elite, the emphasis is on ease of use, so that you and your marine squad can hop into levels on the spur of the moment, and there’s no need to become bogged down in convoluted mythology or major storyline threads.

Fireteam Elite, on the other hand, was a hit with some and a miss with others. Gamespot scored it an 8/10, and Italian journal The Games Machine gave it a 7.8/10, both great reviews. The game received a 4/5 rating from NME, who called it “a dreadful Aliens game but a brilliant co-op blaster.

Despite NME’s claim that Fireteam Elite is an awful Aliens game, many gamers disagreed. A streamlined xeno-blaster that’s pleasant to play with pals and feels like the series’ love letter is what you get from this game. Aliens: Fireteam Elite has become a cult favorite because of its attention to detail and love for the source material.

Aliens Infestation

Aliens: Infestation, a 2D retro specialty from WayForward, is one of the less-known entries on our list.

Infestation, a 2D Metroidvania game, has you controlling a squad of marines as they take on the USS Sulaco, the site of Alien 3’s events. Your marines are immortal, and if you lose all of your marines, the game is ended. The Mummy Demastered, released in 2017, was a semi-sequel to Aliens: Infestation that built on many of its ideas.

Aliens: Infestation garnered a plethora of excellent reviews, including a 4/5 from Joystiq. Aliens: Infestation received an amazing 8.5/10 rating from Jim Sterling, who was writing for Destructoid at the time.

This game has been widely praised, yet few people have heard of it because of its Nintendo DS exclusivity.

Aliens Versus Predator 2

It’s hard to argue that Aliens Versus Predator 2 is a better sequel than the original Aliens Versus Predator from 1999.

A superb sequel to a wonderful game, AVP2 took the best parts of the 1999 original and made them even better. Who cares about the plot when it’s all about Aliens versus Predators? (and humans). Human, alien, and predator characters each have their own abilities and weapons, just like in the original Jaguar first-person shooter.

AVP2 received better reviews than its predecessor, with PC Gamer US awarding it an 89 percent rating and GamePro giving it a decent 4.5/5 rating. It was noted on the now-defunct GameZone website that “Aliens Versus Predator 2 is an explosive and exciting first-person shooter game that embodies the spirit of the FPS genre in a heart-pounding form.”

Aliens vs. Predator 3 was never made, instead being replaced by the aforementioned reboot in 2010.

Saints Row IV (PC / PS3 / PS4 / XBO / XB360)

This is a one-of-a-kind game that’s both nasty and entertaining. This open-world game pits you against an extraterrestrial overlord as the President of the United States. Is this really that serious? This game is anything but ordinary.

Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth (PC)

Sid Meier’s games are notoriously difficult to put down once you start playing them. In terms of gameplay, Beyond Earth is a logical continuation of the Civilization series. Humanity must migrate to the stars to survive the impending collapse of modern civilisation and the exhaustion of the planet. To establish a new civilisation in outer space, lead your people into the ultimate and final frontier!
