Since Rockstar Games introduced the concept of an open world in a 3D game with the Grand Theft Auto series, nearly all games have taken on this style. GTA deserves some of the praise, but not all of it. Role-playing games, such as the first Legend of Zelda, have provided players with an open world to explore and experiment in.

Biomutant is a pre-teen-friendly open world game that plays like Devil May Cry and the original Darksiders, and is inspired by the Legend of Zelda series. Biomutant has a lot in common with Darksiders, and not just the gameplay.

THQ Nordic is the publisher for both of them. So it’s not too surprising that they look and play similarly, despite being made by different companies. We’re crossing our fingers that it can erase the sour taste that Darksiders III left in many players’ mouths.

Since 2015, when Experiment 101 (the studio behind the game) first opened its doors, fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of this title. This guide will delve into these and other questions concerning the game’s release date, development, gameplay, story, and more.

July Update

A new Biomutant gameplay trailer lasting nine minutes was released by THQ Nordic on June 25, 2020. To begin, we’re thrilled to see that they’ve improved the visuals.

An anthropomorphic character on a blue moose appears in the opening seconds of the trailer, and then the scene cuts to what could be the same character engaging in martial arts under the light of the moon.

Then, shots of Biomutant’s world appear, filled with emeralds and cobalts. We flash back to the dawn or dusk where our protagonist is riding a horse. We can extrapolate from this that we will have access to a wide variety of animals and mounts to aid us in our travels.

Again, we can’t let this go without remarking on how beautiful the scenery is. It appears that the developers have made significant improvements to the visuals. We’re crossing our fingers that the gameplay has also been updated and refined. Early gameplay demonstrations and screenings showed promise, but the combat felt stale and uninspired.

The trailer continues with glimpses of additional settings, character customization options, and enemy and boss fights. There has never been a more convincing portrayal of lifelike graphics and character models. The scenery is beautifully rendered. Previously unseen particulars and subtle aesthetic refinements have been added.

Biomutant Release Date News Trailer And Rumors

For instance, Zelda Breath of the Wild-esque lighting, fur that moves in response to the wind, and lush vegetation are all present. It’s easy to see that Biomutant was heavily influenced by the aforementioned video game.

Biomutant appears to be set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans have been eradicated, as evidenced by the trailer. However, the trailer fails to reveal the release date of the game.

At the end of the trailer, the word “Coming” is replaced by “When we’re happy with it” and the Biomutant label is scrawled over the top. The platform announcements and developer/publisher logos follow below that.

The “when we’re happy with it” attitude from THQ Nordic is fine with us. We can’t help but be reminded of George R.R. Martin’s broken promises, but the game is ambitious and likely needs some polishing before it can be considered complete. Wait rather than provide an incomplete and unstable product.

We may have to wait a while, but this gameplay trailer has whet our appetites.

Biomutant Development History

Experiment 101, the Swedish studio behind the game, was founded by a number of former Avalanche employees. THQ Nordic later bought the company in 2017. German gamers first learned of Biomutant in August of that year, thanks to an advertisement in GamesMarkt.

Two days later, on August 21, 2017, the game was officially announced. The developers didn’t waste any time, as a playable demo was presented at Gamescom in Germany later that week.

The developer is best known for the Just Cause series, which came out before Experiment 101. They left Avalanche because they wanted to focus on a more positive project.

The third and fourth games in the Just Cause series, in particular, are a smorgasbord of Michael Bay-isms, which is common knowledge. The game mechanics are light but enjoyable. Experiment 101 saw in Biomutant an opportunity to start over.

It was an opportunity to contribute to something of lasting value. Biomutant sounds like a combination of Ratchet & Clank and Kung Fu Panda. You get a post-apocalyptic sandbox filled with anthropomorphic characters. Any animal lover will find this irresistible.

The gameplay footage showed that the game had potential, with some interesting and original ideas. Combining elements of exploration and in-depth narrative with modern hack-and-slash gameplay. The game features combat, but there is no blood or gore.

This game is the polar opposite of the Just Cause series. In early demos, the game appeared flat and unfinished. The visuals and audio both have flaws. Fights felt empty and the fighting seemed repetitive. The blows were weak and ineffectual.

This video game was developed with the Unreal Engine 4. It should, at the very least, be aesthetically pleasing.

Biomutant Release Date

You’d think George R.R. Martin wrote this game the way the release date has been pushed back so many times. The release date had been anticipated for 2018, but was pushed back to 2019. The year 2019 has ended, and THQ Nordic has yet to announce a firm release date.

It’s 2020, and still no one has announced to players when they can expect the game to be released. The director of Experiment 101, Stefan Ljungqvist, said that the game was finished.

In 2017, he made this claim. It’s been three years, and there’s still no word on when it’ll be available. However, the game can be pre-ordered on Amazon for players. They offer it for the Xbox One, PS4, and Windows PC. Choose from the Regular, Collector’s, or Nuclear release.

The product page promises a New Year’s Eve release for the game. Naturally, this is only a pre-release date. Amazon is just as in the dark as everyone else.

Biomutant Story and Gameplay

Biomutant’s branching storyline, in which your choices have real-time repercussions, is similar to that of the Fable series and the vast majority of role-playing games. However, Experiment 101’s stated goal is to create a game in which player choices significantly impact the narrative.

Since you’ll be able to design and build your own character, you’ll also have complete say over their story arc and where it goes. It’s safe to say that Experiment 101 aspires to provide you with a game that is fluid in more ways than just its gameplay and combat.

Biomutant Plot and Setting

The New World is the location of Biomutant. The Tree of Life serves as a unifying symbol for the New World.

The Tree of Life is poisoned and contaminated by oil after a natural disaster in the game. This obviously has devastating effects, turning the new world into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. As a result of the corruption of the Tree of Life, Bio-Creeps have infested and are wreaking havoc across much of the New World.

All of the New World is fed and kept alive by the five mighty roots of the Tree of Life. The Pillars of Nosgoth will look familiar to players of the Legacy of Kain series. The corruption of the Tree of Life has devastating effects on the New World, similar to those of the corruption of the Pillars.

A choice is given to the player, like in the series, between preserving the Tree of Life and allowing it to die. In order to save the Tree of Life, you must make your way to the very tip of each of its roots. A creature can be seen gnawing on the root.

The Bio-Creeps are primarily used in boss battles. In order to free each root completely, you must first vanquish these foes.

The New World is home to six distinct cultures that can provide assistance on your travels. Only three are truly invested in restoring the Tree of Life; the other three are either apathetic or motivated by other factors. Your choices will either bring them closer together or drive a wedge between them. Very cool stuff.

Karma System

The Karma system in the game controls how various groups and NPCs treat you. It also has an effect on the quests and missions you receive. Furthermore, it will influence the choices available to you during conversation.

Your Automaton will continue to tag along with you as you travel. This is essentially a companion, somewhat (maybe) analogous to a dog in Fable. There is still a lack of information about the Automaton. We anticipate that, like other game components, it will be moddable.

You can increase your Karma by helping one tribe and decreasing it by helping another. This will strengthen your alliance with the tribe you’ve chosen to side with. In the end, you’ll be able to wipe out rival communities and annex their members by force.

Tribal members can be recruited to help with specific quests and missions. The player has the option to ignore and skip this scenario.

You can just ignore the rest of the Tribe and concentrate on saving the Tree of Life. This makes it feel like a high-quality sandbox game in which your choices have real consequences.

Story progression and NPC behavior are heavily influenced by your Karma score in this game. The Yin and Yang are the scales by which Karma is judged. You’ll learn more about the game’s various regions as you speak with the various characters.

Building and Customizing Your Character

As we’ve already established, the player’s initial objective is to make a unique character. You have complete control over its appearance down to the sex, size, shape, fur, fangs, etc. But unlike most games, the choices you make when customizing your character will actually affect how you play.

A character with a higher mass, for instance, must forego agility in exchange for strength and stamina. While leaner figures are quicker and more nimble. Your character’s IQ will soar if you give it a large brain.

Don’t be fooled by my brief description; the game offers extensive options for personalization. The only real restriction is that your character must be raccoon-like.

Combat

You can switch between close-range sword attacks and long-range gunplay, just like in the Devil May Cry and Darksiders games. Biomutant stands apart from these games because it allows players to customize their weapons in more unique ways.

This is due to the fact that making weapons from scratch using components acquired from all over the New World is essentially impossible. The functionality of the weapon is affected by each component. Weapons as varied as pistols, revolvers, shotguns, rifles, throwing stars, shurikens, daggers, knives, and all manner of large swords are within your reach.

Many different kinds of attachments can be added to your weapons. These items pose a fire, freeze, and electrical hazard. When it comes to elemental damage, some foes are easier to kill than others. In-battle weapon swapping allows for a more flexible approach to combat.

Some additions and alterations are not fundamental. For instance, chainsaw and corkscrew modules will be available for attachment to your swords.

Since you’ll be facing multiple enemies at once, you’ll need to be flexible in your combat tactics and use both close-quarters and long-range attacks.

Fighting styles from a variety of martial arts are used. You can see the influence of Gun-fu, Wushu, Chicken-fu, and other styles if you look closely enough. Throughout the New World, you’ll meet important NPCs who hold the keys to unlocking and learning new play styles and abilities.

We can’t be sure if these folks are going to be official senseis or not, but we have a good feeling about it.

Your character and its abilities can be improved in other ways as well. Mutations and bio-mechanical parts can be used to alter a character’s abilities and appearance in the game.

In Bio-contaminated areas, mutations can be applied by spending Bio-points. Bio-points can be earned by vanquishing Bio-creeps and other forms of New World mutation. Radioactive bunkers are another location where players can spend bio-points to use their psi powers. Like, telekinesis and levitation, for instance.

You can attach robotic ligaments, such as a robotic arm resembling Modo’s from Biker Mice from Mars, with the help of biomechanical enhancements. As your adventure in Biomutant unfolds, you’ll be able to do a bit of character building as well as weapon crafting and modification.

Gaining wings, sharper claws, barbed tails, and other cool modifications that affect battle and exploration can be purchased with Bio-points earned in contaminated areas.

World Traversal

The landscapes and environments of Biomutant’s world are constantly evolving. There are grassy fields, jungles, and snowy passes in the Arctic, as well as a seedy underworld and arid desert-like areas.

Spot-Spot is one of the game’s most exciting locations. It’s a wide-open mountain range with plenty of scenic vistas and hidden corners to discover.

You’ll need a combination of modified clothing, genetic enhancements, and transportation to successfully navigate the New World. For instance, if you plan on venturing far into an area known for its high levels of poisonous fumes or air pollution, you’ll need to bring along gas masks and oxygen tanks.

In Biomutant, you can choose from a wide variety of vehicles. We can only hope that the developers have learned from the mistakes made in Just Cause and that the vehicles all have improved handling. Balloons, mech suits, jet packs, and planes will all be available to players as means of transportation.

The creators of Biomutant set out to make it a systematic and in-depth RPG. The game’s day-night cycle and complex dynamic weather system will have an impact on enemy behavior and other mechanics. Temperature fluctuations and weather shifts are both things that can be expected in any given location.

Missions and Quests

It was interesting to learn that the director despises the concept of “fetch quests.” The game’s structure is based on missions, but there won’t be any “fetch” quests. Stefan Ljungqvist told Gamereactor during an interview:

I don’t think we have any collect/fetch quests, and I’m not a big fan of those anyway. So, we aim to have “secret discoveries,” or exploration, where players can find something of interest in the world and follow it to its logical conclusion, earning themselves a small personal questline and a reward along the way. I’ve been trying to steer clear of giving too specific of examples, but perhaps I should.

In addition to the missions and tasks you’ll receive from talking to various NPCs, there are hidden puzzles and items to be found throughout the game. You’ll have to strike out on your own if you want to learn more about the New World and its hidden treasures.

A narrator provides some direction in Biomutant, though. The game becomes more like a live-action story or a pop-up book as a result. The voice may become irritating at times, but it appears that volume controls will help.

When the player is confused or stuck during a puzzle or exploration, the narrator’s voice appears to be helpful. You can use it as a guide to learning the controls and how to play the game.

Enemies

There are many enemies in the game about which we know very little. You’ll be facing off against large ogre-like creatures, small mutated creatures, and martial artists from other tribes, as shown in the trailers and gameplay video.

A Mork is a common adversary in this video game. Bio-creeps known as morks resemble monstrous, oversized praying mantises. They appear to be something out of a nightmare.

Multiplayer

The game has not yet been confirmed to support multiplayer. It appears to be a single-player experience, which is great news for introverted players like myself. I’ll mention it again: you’ll have human-like AI to team up with in the game.

Age Rating

In other words, the developers of Experiment 101 intended for players to have a positive time. A bit darker than the Ratchet and Clank games. Biomutant has a provisional rating of “12 and up” as of right now. Therefore, both preteens and adults can enjoy it.

Biomutant Trailers

Biomutant’s reveal trailer premiered on August 21, 2017, not long before players could try it out in demo form at Gamescom in Germany.

The trailer for the announcement was followed by a gameplay trailer:

The reveal trailer did a good job of building anticipation, but the gameplay trailer showed off the game’s true potential. The gameplay trailer shows off a wide range of locations that your character can explore.

It was also an excellent demonstration of the various weapons and vehicles at your disposal. In addition to the combat, it demonstrated some of the player-NPC interactions. Amazing to me was how quickly the weather could change.

It appears that you will be able to cross both icy mountain passes and parched desert landscapes.

In 2018, visitors to Gamescon in Germany were once again the first to get their hands on the game. Some animations and game mechanics were updated significantly this time around. It had more of a sheen to it, but was far from flawless.

The trailer shows a variety of new foes and additional NPCs. The imaginative and endearing character design is also on display. We also learn some novel methods of getting around in Biomutant’s world.

It’s reminiscent of the feeling of total liberation you get while zipping and flying through the different landscapes of Just Cause. You can see that Experiment 101 infused Biomutant with the knowledge they gained while creating Just Cause.

Again, THQ released trailers for both the Collector’s and Atomic editions of the game near the start of Gamescom 2019.

The game is available in a physical copy in the Atomic edition, and it comes in a special metal box. Players will also receive swag and other accessories, such as

  • High-detail diorama measuring 60x25x30 cm (23x10x12 inches).
  • Steelbook
  • Tee, Large/Extra Large
  • Size: 31″ x 14″ (80cm x 35cm)
  • Fabric prints measuring A1 in size
  • Soundtrack

The Atomic Edition appears to be a top contender for the best holiday gift for gamers.

The collector’s edition was announced alongside the Atomic edition by THQ Nordic on the same day.

The Collector’s Edition includes, in addition to the game itself,

  • Superhero action figure
  • Fabric prints measuring A1 in size
  • Soundtrack
  • Superior Packing

It’s also a more affordable option than the Atomic version. All versions of the game are once again available for pre-order on Amazon.

THQ Nordic has been mum on the exact release date of Biomutant since the announcement of the game’s special editions. There have been some gameplay videos released, but no official release date as of yet.

Biomutant: Every Class, Ranked

Mercenary

The Mercenary class brings together elements from other social strata. A Nippon Katana, Beegbox Murokvont, and a Nippon Copecutter are included in the set as standard issue. Twin Silver Grip, which allows users to wield two one-handed weapons, is also unlocked by default for this class. In addition, the Fury ability is included, which increases the damage done by melee weapons by 10%. Its special advantages are useful in close combat, long range, and psychic abilities.

This class’s variety is impressive, but it’s also the main reason why players shouldn’t choose it. The player needs an early indication of a class’s primary benefit in order to begin planning an optimal build. The Mercenary caste is insufficiently macho for this role. Furthermore, this class is only accessible to those who have pre-ordered the game, so not everyone gets a shot at it.

Commando

Players who wish to dabble in both ranged and melee weaponry should consider playing as a Commando. Shotguns and other close-to-mid range weapons are preferred in this class over longer-ranged rifles. Clencher Knives, Beegox Murokvonts, and Pew-Pew Bosksprakkas are some of the primary weapons available to the player. The Commando’s default ability, called “Fury,” boosts the damage of their ranged attacks by 10%. Its parks improve the critical chance and damage of ranged weapons, as well as the stun chance of shotguns and the attack speed of melee weapons.

Those who can’t make up their minds between a ranged and melee build will find this class to be a happy medium. Biomutant’s gameplay allows for this same approach at times. It can be difficult to strike a good balance between the two play styles, but this class may make it easier.

Saboteur

The Saboteur is the game’s equivalent to a dexterity or agility build, placing a premium on quickness and agility. The Clencher Stabby and Pew-Pew Bosksprakka, two fast-firing weapons, are its standard issue. Twin Silver Grip lets the user wield two melee weapons at once, and Hypergenic lowers the cost of dodging by 20%; these are the two default abilities. The benefits of this status are similarly focused on freedom of movement.

The Saboteur is a great option for players who want to focus on Dexterity or Agility. Because movement is so essential to success in the game world, it’s a natural fit. The catch is that it doesn’t improve the player’s defenses or weapons much.

Sentinel

The Sentinel is a Strength or Tank character in the game. With the highest possible health and starting protection, the player can confidently take on any challenge in the game with this class. The Metalpipie Crushblob and Pew-Pew Bosksprakka are the Sentinel’s primary weapons. Toughness is its default ability, and it increases the player’s base armor by 10%. The benefits it provides raise the player’s defense or health. There’s one in particular that can reflect 10% of the player’s ranged attacks back at the enemy.

The Sentinel build is user-friendly due to its increased stamina and durability in combat. This class is also well-suited to using slow-moving but powerful weapons, such as crush or two-handed slash weapons.

Psi-Freak

The Psi-Freak is Biomutant’s mage specialization. Spark Gloves and Pew-Pew Bosksprakka are its default weapons. The player is expected to rely more on their psi powers than on their melee weapon, which is why the game begins with an unarmed type. The Spark Ball allows you to summon a ball of electricity to throw at enemies, and the Megamind boosts your Ki-Energy regeneration by 20% and is one of your first abilities. All of its advantages are geared toward boosting Ki-Energy, IQ, and power damage.

This is a challenging class, but the payoff for succeeding is high. Biomutant’s psi-powers and mutations are fascinating to experiment with and produce shockingly destructive results. The Psi-Freak’s unique abilities and play style greatly enhance battle.

Dead-Eye

The Dead-Eye specialization is designed for players who prefer to rely solely on their ranged attacks. With Perfect Reload, the starting class ability, the player can keep laying waste to their foes without taking a breather to reload. The Xon Bigblade and Pew-Pew Bosksprakka are its default weapons. As a result of the class’s abilities, ranged attacks are more effective, have a higher chance to critically hit, and can be fired at a faster rate. They also advocate for dual-wielding weapons at a distance.

It could be argued that the Dead-Eye class is currently the best option available in the game. Many of the game’s deadliest weapons are ranged varieties; this class mitigates their primary weakness, the time it takes to reload. The player can rapidly deplete an opponent’s health while maintaining a safe distance.

Biomutant: 10 Crucial Tips For New Players

Don’t Get Too Caught Up In Character Creation

There are five available races at the outset, leading some new players to worry that they need to spend too much time getting their character just right. Players shouldn’t worry too much about this decision’s long-term consequences, though; it’s more of a springboard than anything else.

While these decisions will initially improve certain statistics or grant protection from certain types of elements, those improvements and protections can be changed in the future. In fact, midway through the game, you can completely respec your character’s stats.

Choose A Class That Fits

You can pick from five different races, and five different classes (excluding the mercenary, which is a pre-order bonus). A player must carefully consider their preferred playstyle before settling on a specific class. Whether it’s a focus on ranged combat or psychic powers, each class has its own set of advantages.

Some classes have advantages over others, such as the Saboteur’s ability to duel-wield weapons and the Commando’s resistance to damage. The Dead-Eye, for example, has abilities that are well-suited to both close-quarters and long-range combat, making it one of the more versatile classes.

Morality Isn’t As Important As You Think

Near the outset of Biomutant, players are introduced to the game’s morality system. The player is given the option of either pursuing the light or the shadows, and this duality carries over into subsequent dialogue options. In fact, the player’s sense of right and wrong will determine which of two tribes they join, each of which has its own inclination toward the forces of light and darkness.

A player’s decision is not irrevocably impacted by this, though. Even if they have a light alignment, a character can still make bad decisions. Story and character selection, which are usually given a lot of weight in video games, can be viewed in Biomutant as just another layer of personalization.

Crafting Is The Best Way To Get Stronger

Biomutant’s crafting system is surprisingly deep and flexible, allowing for a wide range of customization options. You can upgrade new items, combine components to make new weapons, and more.

Using this method, crafting new items and leveling up is a breeze. Interestingly, players can break down too-high-level or unwanted items they find to create materials that are currently useful in the game.

Dodging And Parrying Are Essential

Despite the apparent lack of utility, dodging and parrying are the foundation of most fights. Dodging, for instance, can be used to easily avoid even the most devastating attacks. It’s a great asset for ranged combatants because it can be used to put distance between the player and their enemies.

However, parrying can involve greater risk but pay off in the long run. In addition to preventing any damage from being taken, parrying an attack when the lightning symbol appears above an enemy leaves them vulnerable to vicious counterattacks, especially when certain perks are used.

Don’t Forget About Fast Travel

Traveling between locations on such a large map, especially when backtracking, can be a major hassle in Biomutant, as it is in most great open-world games. Fortunately, fast transportation helps to alleviate a lot of that inconvenience. Players can activate any fast travel station they come across simply by interacting with it; many of these stations can be found in close proximity to significant locations, such as characters and forts.

Fast travel is often the most efficient way to get from one place to another in Biomutant, so keep that in mind even if exploring the world and using the different mounts at your disposal is a huge part of the game’s appeal.

Use Wung-Fu’s Unique Strengths

The Biomutant-exclusive mechanic known as “Wung-Fu” can grant a player character more strength than the name implies. Wung-Fu includes both long-range and close-range techniques, and it has the added bonus of allowing players to unlock combos. New combos are unlocked as the player progresses, and they all belong to the same basic categories of fighting. These can be anything from rapid punches to ground slams to hurling a melee weapon at an opponent.

Therefore, the skills acquired through Wung-Fu can be beneficial for new players because they possess important qualities such as high damage or attacks that affect a large area.

Remember The Basics Of Combat

Every Biomutant beginner should take the time to familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of the game’s combat systems. For instance, just because a character is better at melee or ranged combat doesn’t necessarily mean they should ignore the other. Having more than one strategy for taking on an adversary can often yield better results.

Moreover, being mobile is crucial. Keeping on the move is essential in situations where the player is up against a large number of enemies. When a player is in the air or firing a shot, time slows down briefly. The protection from enemy fire and the improved mobility afforded by increased altitude are both benefits of this strategy.

Make Sure To Follow Side Missions

Like many other open-world games, Biomutant features a variety of optional quests. These optional quests can help a player level up throughout their time in Biomutant. Numerous optional quests exist, each with its own unique rewards. This may involve learning something new, gaining experience, or even acquiring loot that can be used to create or upgrade equipment.

Of course, such side missions are not required, but if a player feels weak or wants to explore more of what Biomutant has to offer, they can be a common and helpful way to do so.

Explore!

Exploration is a big part of the appeal of any open-world game. Discovering new people, objects, and locations is always exciting, and it’s fascinating to watch such a vast world come to life. Players can always find something new to do in Biomutant if they take the time to explore the game’s expansive world.

Biomutant has enough hidden content, especially for players willing to comb through its open world, to greatly extend the playtime beyond the recommended ten hours.

Final Words

Do you find it annoying when video games continually tease you? Someone can only be teased for so long before they stop caring. Biomutant needs to be released before the PlayStation 5 at the very least. Biomutant is looking dated in comparison to newer games released this year. In any case, you can see why it’s taken so long to settle on a release date when you think about the game’s methodical gameplay and all the subtleties in it.

In addition, it can be played on multiple platforms. Instead of rushing to release a flawed product, we hope the developers will take their time perfecting this game. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading this article, and that it’s given you enough reason to keep hoping for its eventual release. Please enjoy your gaming and thank you for reading!
