To us, the Metro games are the gold standard when it comes to open-world survival games. Three more games are planned after the sequel to Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro Novel, on which these games are based. The game did very well despite its lack of Grand Theft Auto-style open world size or multiplayer modes.

Even though the first game in this series didn’t come out until 2010, the novel was published in 2005. The novel from which the game takes its name is set in Russia after a series of nuclear attacks by NATO; the hero of the story is exiled to a metro tunnel to escape the authorities.

In order to advance through the game’s story, the player must engage in combat with a variety of NPCs and monsters, and complete a number of side quests. In the first game, you only have access to a few weapons, but in the latest installment of the series, you have access to a wide variety of weapons, both real and fictional, many of which you can modify.
All Metro games feature an in-game currency that can be spent on extra bullets and weapon upgrades. This game does not feature any microtransactions or the currency cannot be purchased with real money.
There is no multiplayer in this game; however, it was initially reported that the developers were also working on a multiplayer mode for Metro Last Light; however, it was later revealed that the developers’ primary focus is on single player, and the plan was scrapped. This trilogy consists of the games Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro: Exodus.
In this article, we will take a look at the Metro games and their respective requirements, as well as review each in detail to learn about the gameplay and story. We won’t bother discussing the game’s mechanics and storyline, but instead will look at the series’s game order.
The Plot
Characters in the story are survivors who have taken refuge in the metro tunnels beneath Moscow. Different groups at various stations have developed distinctive social hierarchies.
There is an underlying power struggle for control of supplies, weapons, and other material goods among these groups. Radiation, mutants, and other environmental hazards abound in the tunnels, making this an unpleasant place to be. Above ground, things are even more dire.
In this game, you take on the role of a Stalker, a person who roams the world in search of resources.
Metro Games In Order
Here’s the rundown of Metro games, and if any of them pique your interest, I say give them a shot so you can learn the whole story. I’m excited to kick off this series with the first item on our list.
Metro 2033
- Published on March 16th, 2010
- Included are the following operating systems: Linux, OS X, Nintendo Switch, Linux, OS X, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia
I mentioned in the introduction that the novel upon which Metro 2033 was based was published in 2010, and that the film adaptation followed in 2010. The main focus of this game is a first-person shooter, but it also features horror and survival elements. After a nuclear war, the survivors of Moscow are confined to underground tunnels and become the protagonists of the game.
First-person gameplay is an option, and players are tasked with using a variety of weapons to eliminate enemies and other players. There are a few methods for eliminating the opposition, but the stealthy approach is the most effective. Ammunition can be purchased from merchants or looted from fallen foes.
There are parts of the subway station that are contaminated with nuclear radiation; the player will need to wear a protective mask if they venture there. If your gas mask is damaged during combat while in the radiation zone, you must replace it as soon as possible or your health will begin to slowly decrease.
The setting, story, horror, and stealth elements all received high marks from the game’s many fans. Some users complained about the game’s terrible enemies, AI, and other bugs, among other issues.
While most of the action takes place in the city’s underground tunnels, players will occasionally have to venture above ground to explore the ruined areas of Moscow. Story is conveyed primarily through gameplay, with cutscenes displaying key events and developments.
The player’s ammo supply is usually low, so looting dead bodies is a common strategy for progressing through the game. Throughout the game, you’ll come across “military-grade ammunition,” which serves as both a currency in the tunnels and a resource for improving your primary weapon.
There are moral decisions the player must make at various points in the game, such as whether or not to help the homeless or the needy with in-game currency; these choices affect the ending sequences you see. But despite your decisions, the game will not reward you in any way.
The original Metro 2033 can be played on any modern computer without a high-end gaming rig. In order to play this game on your computer, make sure it meets both the minimum and recommended system requirements set forth by the developer.

Indeed, the company has unleashed a masterpiece, and the gameplay mechanics and story are what most players enjoy the most. About nine hours are needed to finish the game’s story, and that’s just the main missions. The extra ones are fun, but they aren’t required. It also is dependent on the game’s difficulty setting.
Metro: Last Light

Although there are a few key differences, Metro: Last Light’s gameplay is identical to that of Metro 2033, making it the best game in the Metro series. As with Metro 2033, the story of Metro Last Light continues from the novel’s satisfying conclusion.
Unlike its predecessor, which was only made available on PC and Linux, this game can be played on Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows in addition to the recently added Google Stadia. There was no shift in tone because the game still follows the same formula: players still engage in first-person shootouts, and elements like survival and horror remain intact.
It’s a continuation of the previous game in the series, so there’s a nuclear attack on Moscow and you have to track down the Dark Ones hiding in the various tunnels below the city. The game’s improved in-game mechanics, weapon customization system, and some graphical upgrades are the game’s most notable changes.
The game’s main owner/franchise creator Dmitry Glukhovsky penned the game’s story and outline, and an 80-person development team is currently working on the game. At the time of the game’s release, there were rumors that multiplayer would be included; however, this feature may have been scrapped in favor of a more focused single-player experience. The Wii U version of the game was also said to be in the works, but that release was scrapped as well.
The majority of players who reviewed the game found its setting, world building, and visuals to be excellent. While it received mostly positive reviews overall, it was panned for its flawed artificial intelligence and other issues, much like the game before it. Given that the game sold more copies in its first week than Metro 2033 did in its entire lifetime, it can be considered a commercial success for the developer.
While some of the weapons in this game are based on real ones, the vast majority are completely made up. This game’s tunnels are very dim, so the player will spend most of their time with either a flashlight or a lighter.
You’ll need a powerful computer if you want to play this game, as it has higher hardware requirements than the average game. You should check out the recommended and minimum Metro Last Light system requirements before you buy and download the game.

Both Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light are excellent, but you should play the former before the latter so you have some idea of what happened before and what will happen next. Even completing the game’s final mission won’t give you all the context you need. The game’s story can be completed in 10 hours of continuous playtime, give or take depending on the difficulty setting. As a whole, it’s one of the best games ever made, right up there with Metro 2033.
Metro Redux
- The 26th of August, 2014 is the official date of release.
- Supported systems include PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Mac, Linux, PS4, XB1, NS, and Stadia.
With the passage of four years since the initial release of the game, the developer has released a remastered version with updated visuals and gameplay. The company announced the Metro Redux’s release on 22 May 2014, stating that it would be a remastered version of the original Metro 2033. Although the game’s story is the same as before, many other aspects have been upgraded.
The new 4A Engine was also used in Last Light, so all of the improvements and gameplay tweaks from that game have been implemented in Metro 2033 for the Redux. The remastered version was only available on next-gen consoles, not on older systems like the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
If you’re interested in trying Metro Redux but don’t own it, you can do so by downloading the demo, which gives you access to the game’s first third of the single-player campaign. This is a wonderful option for trying out the game, and if you end up loving it, you can always upgrade to the full version and pick up right where you left off.
That wraps up everything for the updated version of Metro 2033, but the developer also released Metro Last Light Redux some time later. The new version of the game for eight generations of consoles was not part of the original plan, but it was announced alongside the other Redux version.
The company released the remastered downloadable content of these games alongside the Redux editions. We’re talking a pretty sweet deal here, as this package includes both the Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light, as well as their respective downloadable content packs.
The developer released it for the Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia consoles recently. The game is currently compatible with nine different systems. Game critics praised the redone version of Last Light, but most users were unimpressed by the superficial visual changes.
Redux versions of both games were commercial successes for the developer, just like the originals. Though they did not disclose specific figures, the company predicted that Metro: Redux Collection would quickly sell over 1.5 million copies. In the month of its release, it also ranked as the sixth best-selling book in the United States.
Because of the improved visuals, the game requires a more powerful computer and video card than the previous installments. The CPU requirements are the same as previous games, but the graphics requirements have increased.

Those who have played Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light and are interested in playing them again have several excellent choices. A Metro Redux bundle, which includes both games, is an alternative to playing the originals again. It’s not the original, but a remastered edition with updated visuals and gameplay. Playing these games will improve your gaming experience, and if you enjoyed the original Metro games, you’ll adore the Metro Redux.
Metro Exodus
- On the 15th of February, 2019, the release will be available.
- PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google’s cloud-based gaming platform, Stadia.
Another excellent game in the Metro series, this one follows on from the previous installment, Metro 2033, and is also a sequel. Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel serves as a springboard for this game, which he also wrote from start to finish, including all of the pivotal scenes and narratives. Users can use stealth to their advantage in this first-person shooter.
The player is a survivor of a nuclear attack on the country, and the game takes place in various regions of Russia and Kazakhstan, including some major cities. The metro tunnels are sufficiently dark that the player will need a light source, such as a flashlight or a lighter, to navigate them.

The dynamic day-night cycle and evolving climate system set this installment apart from its predecessors. According to the game’s plot, players will spend a full year in-game. This game’s story begins one year after the events of Metro: Last Light, when a new nuclear war breaks out around the globe.
The game’s plot opens in the Metro tunnel during a nuclear winter or a harsh winter, and the seasons gradually change from there. While the game’s plot unfolds underground, the majority of the action takes place in the open world as players engage in gun battles and search for supplies and safe havens. When the player finally emerges from the tunnel, he learns that NATO has bombed and occupied several major Russian cities.
Although Metro Exodus was announced in 2017, development actually began in 2014, after the release of Metro Redux. The most recent version of the 4A Engine was used to create the game, and it was made available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The company eventually made the game available on Google Stadia by porting it over.
This game has two DLC packs that continue the story and are available a few months after the initial release. The Two Colonels is the first downloadable content and it becomes available after Artyom discovers Anna’s illness cure. Both the main campaign and its subsequent DLC, Sam’s Story, are highly recommended. After its debut, the company declared the game a smashing success, having sold 50% more copies than any of their previous offerings.

User reviews suggest this is one of the best Metro games to play in 2021, but if you want to know what happened before this game came out, you should start with the Metro Redux bundle. It continues the same story and character from the previous book in the series. Still, the enhanced visuals and gameplay are what really sell this game. There have been no additional Metro games released by the developer since this one, so it makes sense to play them in chronological order.
Do I Need to Play the Metro Games in Order?
If you want to get the most out of the Metro games and get the most out of the Metro universe (especially if you don’t know the books), it’s best to play the entire trilogy in order.
You can skip a title and not feel like you’re missing out on the game’s charm. Each Metro game stands on its own as a self-contained adventure with its own story and objectives.
To get the most out of the series without playing all the games, I suggest Metro: Exodus.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is Metro Exodus?
If you stick to the main missions, you can finish Metro Exodus in about 15 hours. The length of time it takes to complete the game’s story may increase with the difficulty setting you choose. In addition to the main story missions, Metro Exodus also features a number of optional side quests.
Is Metro Exodus a horror game?
In Metro Exodus, first-person shooting is the main focus, but there are also survival horror and stealth components. Post-apocalyptic Russia serves as the backdrop for this game, in which the protagonist must complete missions in order to advance. This game features elements such as a dynamic environment, day/night cycles, and a dynamic weather system, more typically seen in open world or first-person shooter games.
What is the Metro Redux bundle?
Remastered versions of Metro 2033 (originally released in 2010) and Metro Last Light (also remastered) make up Metro redux. There have been some changes made to the gameplay and visuals for the better in the remaster. Each game and all downloadable content is available for purchase separately, but users can save money by purchasing the bundle. Spartan and Survival modes, as well as the illustrious Ranger Mode, are included in the package, so I guess we can call it a deal.
What was the first Metro game released?
The first installment in the Metro series, Metro 2033, was published in 2010 by 4A Games, a Ukrainian video game developer. Based on the Metro novel, this game’s sequel, Metro: Last Light, was released a few years later and picks up where the previous game left off. With the release of Metro Exodus in 2019, the studio debuted a new installment in the series, developed with the proprietary 4A Engine.
Do I need to play the Metro games in order?
You need to play the Metro games in order to understand the story because the events from one game continue into the next.
Should I play Metro 2033 or Last Light first?
2033. It’s the first part of the story and it’s fantastic, even if the gameplay is a little wonky.
Is Metro 2033 Redux the same Metro 2033?
No. While the story remains the same, Redux updates the game to 2033 with the visual and mechanical improvements introduced in Last Light.
Does Metro Redux include the DLC?
Yes. All of the downloadable content for the Ranger mode is included in both Redux releases.
Conclusion
To date, that concludes the Metro series of games. Due to the recent release of the last game, it is understandable that the developers have remained silent regarding the future of the series.
Despite its commercial success, Exodus is not expected to be the last book in the series.
