In the Tomb Raider games, puzzle-solving and exploration are woven together in a dramatic action-platformer style.

We’ve compiled a list of the greatest games like Tomb Raider to play once you’ve completed the most recent entry, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

In 1996, the first Tomb Raider game was made available. Core Design and Eidos Interactive developed and published the game.

With Square Enix as publisher and Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal as principal developers, the Tomb Raider franchise has returned to its roots.

Lara Croft is still on the hunt for treasure and adventure, despite the fact that the Tomb Raider we have now isn’t exactly the same as the 1996 version.

There won’t be any new games for a time, considering the previous one came out in 2018. It’s a good thing that Tomb Raider isn’t the only game like this out there on PC and current-gen consoles.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

You take on the role of a couple of siblings who are attempting to flee their English manor while being hunted by the English Army and the Black Plague. A Plague Tale: Innocence is set in France in 1348 and involves both human and rat foes that the player must avoid at all costs.

A Plague Tale: Innocence review | PC Gamer

Players assume control of Amicia and her younger brother, Hugo, as they explore dark tunnels, decaying city streets, and bleak wildernesses. Both characters, like Lara Croft, begin the game with little to no combat or survival experience.

Although they learn to employ common items to construct a variety of weapons, traps, and diversion gadgets as the story progresses. Slingshots and a torch can be used to frighten away rats and solve riddles throughout the game.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

Similar to Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed has evolved dramatically over time, moving away from classic stealth and towards action-RPG territory. ‘ Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, released in 2018, brought new vitality to the series while also introducing players to a fascinating new historical setting.

There are a lot of Ancient Greek temples, grottos, and viewpoints spread over Odyssey’s open-world for you to discover hidden chests, notes, and weaponry if you’re a fan of Tomb Raider’s historical connections.

When it comes to skill and weapon upgrades, the rebooted Tomb Raider games have also excelled at providing plenty of options. Last but not least, using Odyssey’s precise controls to scale ancient Greek statues and architecture is a rewarding experience.

Middle Earth: Shadow of War

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

Shadow of War is a follow-up to 2014’s Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, an open-world action RPG. Talion, a ranger whose body is possessed by the spirit of an elf lord with magical powers, reprises his role in the game.

Together, they set out to create a mighty ring and assemble an army capable of taking down Sauron’s wicked empire. It expands on the first game’s Nemesis system by introducing new monster kinds and randomly created Orc Leaders.

A mix of exploration, stealth, and real-time fighting are featured in the gameplay. Rather than employing a variety of hand-made equipment to fight their adversaries, players instead rely on a magical sword and bow and arrow that can be enhanced through the use of a skill tree.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

PS4 is the system on which this article was created.

The gameplay and ideas of Uncharted and Tomb Raider are strikingly similar. Besides, they’re both about intrepid explorers combating terrible militias and organizations in strange locales while looking for historical artifacts.

Uncharted’s story and characters are better developed, making each game feel like an interactive movie with action-packed set pieces. Tomb Raider has more gameplay variation. It’s best suited to fans of Naughty Dog’s Tomb Raider titles who want to see how the studio handles Indiana Jones.

Remember that the first two Uncharted games are a little antiquated, so you may want to get the entire collection to get the full tale. While Uncharted 4 wraps up the Nathan Drake story, it does a fantastic job of bringing you up to speed on everything that’s happened so far.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

Despite Metal Gear Solid’s infamously confusing tale, you’ll find a genuinely rewarding open-world game with versatile action-stealth gameplay after you get past the story. It’s worth noting that this is the final game in the series to be created by Kojima Productions.

After waking up from a coma, Big Boss enlists a crew of mercenaries to help him avenge those who put him in that coma in this post-Ground Zeroes video game. Phantom Pain’s open-ended gameplay will keep you going even if you don’t care about any of the story or characters.

The game rewards you for taking non-lethal means against enemy camps, which are distributed over the world. There’s a lot of freedom in this game to customize your playstyle and prioritize particular weapons or methods, much like there is in Tomb Raider.

The Evil Within

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

Survival horror games like Resident Evil and Outlast may fall under the banner of The Evil Within and its sequel, but they’re far more forgiving than those titles. However, you don’t have to go back to an earlier save because of a lack of resources like ammo.

With limited ammo and battle scenarios that force the player to flee and hide, this is quite reminiscent of how the rebooted Tomb Raider games approached combat. A third-person perspective, action-stealth gameplay, and crafting mechanics are all shared by the two franchises.

Sebastian Castellanos, a Detective, is thrust into a terrible other reality filled with blood, corpses, and unearthly monsters. You play as Sebastian Castellanos. Starting out in the game, Sebastian is easily outmatched by his enemies, but as he progresses, he becomes much more manageable.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

The cinematic quality of titles like Tomb Raider was mirrored by Respawn in Jedi: Fallen Order, which offered an original take on the galaxy far, far away. A Jedi Padawan, Cal Kestis, is on a mission to unearth the mysteries of an ancient civilisation in this post-Episode III game.

As the game progresses, Cal is pursued relentlessly by the Empire and their deadly Inquisitors. As long as he has a lightsaber and the force at his disposal, Cal is ready to take on the Empire.

Gameplay includes close-range fighting, open exploration, and platforming in 3D environments. With a wealth of knowledge and rich character backstories, Jedi: Fallen Order is like Tomb Raider in its ability to build a captivating game environment congruent with the Star Wars mythos.

Horizon Zero Dawn

PC, PlayStation 4

Anyone who admires Lara Croft’s archery in recent Tomb Raider games should check out Horizon Zero Dawn, one of the most recent PS4 exclusives that will arrive on PC in 2020. As Aloy, an outsider with a mystery backstory, you must prove yourself worthy of joining the Nora tribespeople by doing whatever it takes.

Aloy, like Lara, has a troubled past and unsolved problems with her family. As the story progresses, more and more information about her past and the enigma of how the earth became overrun with mechanical monsters is revealed.

Long-range and close-range combat are both part of the gameplay, with a focus on stealthy techniques like setting traps and distracting surrounding foes. Different types of enemies each have their own unique behaviors and strengths and weaknesses, and strategies for dealing with them change over time. There are a lot of enemies to fight with.

Control

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

Many of the concepts and techniques from prior Remedy games, such as Quantum Break and Alan Wake, are present in Control. As Jesse Faden, a woman with magical powers and a shape-shifting gun known as the Service Weapon, you explore a secret government facility known as the Oldest House.

The game is an exhilarating rollercoaster of furious action and dynamic exploration, combining aspects of metroidvanias, third-person shooters, and science fiction. There are additional areas to explore as Jesse gets further into the Oldest House as the game progresses.

As Jesse, players will be able to swiftly traverse vast open spaces packed with waves of opponents by using his levitation and telekinesis superpowers. While the fighting in Control is faster and more challenging, you’ll be taking on the role of a powerful female protagonist who must face up against ominous foes in Tomb Raider.

God of War

PS4 is the system on which this article was created.

God of War, the PlayStation-exclusive hack n’ slash, gets a major makeover in 2018, serving as somewhat of a soft relaunch. In addition to tearing monsters apart and reliving dreams of his deceased family, Kratos must also take care of his infant kid.

The game’s new combat, exploration, and progression mechanics have a Tomb Raider-like feel to them. For starters, Kratos can acquire resources and experience points throughout the game to enhance his weapons and abilities.

As in past God of War games, there’s a greater emphasis on exploration than on following a predetermined course. Tomb Raider’s visceral and theatrical gameplay is a great match for Kratos’ battles with the Norse pantheon of gods and demons in Kratos: Gods and Monsters.

Death Stranding

PC, PlayStation 4

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, like all of his other works, is a bizarre odyssey with frightening moments and fascinating characters. Despite the game’s shortcomings, the game’s unique gameplay loop keeps it interesting and engaging.

As Sam Porter Bridges, a delivery worker, you’ll have to transport goods throughout an apocalyptic United States in this video game. Sam’s armor wears out over time due to severe weather conditions and unseen monsters called BTs in the open environment, which the players are subjected to.

As in the Tomb Raider games, crafting and exploration are emphasized. With the use of ladders and ropes, Sam is capable of climbing mountains and navigating chasms and rivers in no time flat. Like Tomb Raider’s smooth platforming, the traversal in Death Stranding is likely to be appreciated by fans of Tomb Raider.

Dishonored

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

When it comes to action-stealth games, Dishonored has a long history of offering entertaining gameplay. Non-lethal methods are encouraged in the series, but you can just as easily go around killing every bad guy you come across to get the “good” endings.

Similarly to the Tomb Raider series, players are rewarded for exploring their environment with new abilities, upgrades, and bits of lore. Corvo, a former bodyguard turned assassin, is the protagonist of the first game, which takes place in the plague-stricken city of Dunwall.

It’s up to the players whether they want to play as Corvo or Emily in the sequel. There’s a strong emphasis on royal genealogy, but the Dishonored games also have a strong concentration on action and puzzle solving.

Far Cry 3

PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

Despite being launched in 2012, Far Cry 3 is still a popular first-person shooter in the year 2022. Despite the fact that the franchise has been around for much longer, many people believe that Ubisoft found its footing with FC3.

When you play as 20-something Jason Brody, you’re on a tropical island adventure with his companions. Jason sets out to save his buddies from the pirates who have taken them hostage and return them safely to their home.

Lara and her crew were stranded on a tropical island occupied by the villainous Trinity organization in the first Tomb Raider rebooted trilogy installment, which has a similar scenario. As like Lara Croft, Jason Croft must make do with any resources he can get his hands on in order to have any hope of survival.

Uncharted’ (series)

Uncharted is the series to play if you want to go on a journey in search of hidden wealth. There are lots of close encounters with the elements, as well as shootouts and otherworldly elements in this PlayStation exclusive IP. When it comes to finding the world’s most valuable treasures, Nathan Drake is a smart and fearless adventurer. The good news is that you may play through all of his escapades on PlayStation 4.

Prince of Persia

Her agility and dexterity are impressive in their own right. Both of these things, however, the Prince holds an advantage over her. It’s worth checking out the trilogy of games that brought him back to prominence if you want proof. Games like Warrior Within, The Sands of Time, and A Game of Thrones are fantastic examples of action/adventure that are well worth playing again and over again. Slick swordplay, adventurous platforming, and engrossing storylines are common threads across these games. Oh, and don’t forget about the Sands of Time Remake, either.

Alan Wake

When it comes to making linear third-person action/adventure games, Remedy Entertainment is quite adept. The Finland-based development team went on to a more supernatural take on the genre after performing outstanding work on the Max Payne series. When you play as Alan Wake, you take on the role of a mystery novelist exploring a tiny village that has been plagued by strange happenings. In order to solve the game’s fundamental mystery, you’ll have to fight against unearthly creatures and explore some eerie locations.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

It’s no secret that Miss Croft is an expert at creeping up on and killing her many enemies. If you were most excited by that part of the rebooted trilogy, then you’ll enjoy the Metal Gear Solid games. You shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to play The Phantom Pain, the latest installment in the series. Open-world exploration is a big part of Snake’s gameplay, and you’ll get to use a variety of weapons to defeat your enemies. This is a game that requires a lot of evasive maneuvering, recruiting soldiers, and relying on trustworthy partners.

Beyond Good and Evil

Beyond Good and Evil, one of Ubisoft’s most popular games, features many of the characteristics that Tomb Raider fans would like. You take on the role of Jade, a photojournalist on the trail of an extraterrestrial conspiracy. Pey’j, the talking pig, will help you solve puzzles, sneak around, and engage in action-packed battles with your combat staff. One of the all-time great films, Beyond Good and Evil continues to excite and enthrall audiences today.

Darksiders

For its own unique personality, the Darksiders IP evidently dipped into a number of popular titles. War, Death, and Fury’s post-apocalyptic challenges and tribulations are definitely inspired by games like The Legend of Zelda, God of War, and Tomb Raider. Open environments abound in each game in the series, full of complex dungeons, gigantic enemies, and a bevy of mysteries to discover. Darksiders stands out as one of the list’s more underappreciated IPs.

Hitman

Lara Croft has a lot of practice in taking out the enemy before they know what hit them. Only Agent 47, who has always been entrusted with eliminating his hired targets in the Hitman franchise, has a bit more experience in this area of competence. More ways to kill your enemies are available in the rebooted series, as well as large regions that allow you to sneak up on them in the most efficient manner possible.

Hitman 3 review | Rock Paper Shotgun

Just Cause

The Just Cause series has a special place in the hearts of all the crazy people out there. In order to overthrow a terrible administration, you’ll need to adopt some unconventional measures. Rico Rodriguez possesses a large arsenal of weapons and tools, allowing him to destroy nearly anything in his path. Anarchy reigns supreme on the islands featured in all of the games in the series, which eventually become your very own exploding playgrounds

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Do yourself a favor and pay attention to this underappreciated treasure. Your emotions will be stirred by the film’s stunning vistas, mysterious settings, and the central storyline of two unlikely friends. It is your duty as Monkey to accompany a group of survivors through the desolate landscape of a dystopian future. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West has a lot to offer, from robot-smashing to heart-stopping platforming to learning what happened to humanity in the first place.

A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019)

An Innocent Age: A Plague Tale: Innocence tells the story of two young brothers who must battle the French Inquisition and plague-carrying rats in order to survive. Two of the protagonists are much more susceptible than Lara.

Despite her lack of physical strength, Amicia de Rune is just as resourceful as the adventurer. As Croft has done on several occasions, she must employ stealth and solve puzzles to get through the game.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019)

Star Wars and Tomb Raider sound like extreme opposites to one another. Jedi: Fallen Order, on the other hand, has a more grounded feel to it than many of the SW films. Cal, like Lara, is a kind-hearted and adventurous character, just like the protagonist Cal.

Even in Fallen Order, his story isn’t that different from Croft’s in 2013. When he is faced with impossible odds, he becomes more capable than he ever imagined. Even the gameplay is similar, with Cal having to solve numerous puzzles and climb a lot.

Lara Croft And The Temple of Osiris (2014)

Aside from her name being in the title, this is a lot more imaginative journey than she is used to. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light II is an isometric sequel to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. Set, the god of chaos, is attempting to raise an evil army and take over the world.

A new spin on an old character and formula, but with just enough weapons and treasures to keep things feeling like a classic Croft game. It’s also on par with the best Tomb Raiders.

Darksiders (2010)

When it comes to fanciful titles, Darksiders might be of interest to lovers of the investigative series.

While it’s true that the first two games in this dark fantasy story borrowed heavily from the Legend of Zelda series, it would be a lie to suggest that the settings, cross-sections, and riddles didn’t have a hint of Tomb Raider about them. Even if War is better equipped than Lara Croft, she’d still be able to manage his terrain at any given time.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)

When you think of Zelda-style games, you might not think of Tomb Raider. Even so, the series’s greatest and possibly most cherished addition is sure to please fans of exploration games, especially in the dungeons it invites players to visit.

Tomb Raider-esque dungeons and riddles can be found throughout the game, especially if Link has to traverse over massive obstacles. Gamers are missing out on some fun if they don’t pick up this adventure, despite the fact that it may be devoid of gunplay and action-movie notes.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (2007)

Tomb Raider and Uncharted have been compared a lot. Tomb Raider enthusiasts should start with Naughty Dog’s first game, which features a fast-paced action style and a rainforest setting full of mysteries.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune also adds a mythological element, but it’s not overtly exploited. Additionally, Nathan’s likability is what makes this game so enjoyable.

Enslaved: Odyssey To The West (2010)

This one takes place in the near future, when there are nearly no humans left on the planet. Action-adventure elements are prominent in the gameplay, which relies largely on platforming.

Similar to Tomb Raider, players can take a break from the main story to focus on solving riddles they find during their journey. In the platforming segments, the playable character scales and swings across ruins in a natural setting.

Just Cause 3 (2015)

If you’re looking for an open-world game with a strong emphasis on exploring, Just Cause 3 is a deserving exception. Even more tombs can be found and unearthed by using the platforming mechanics.

Many resources remain untouched in order to pique the player’s sense of exploration in this game, with the emphasis on how they can be used to scale buildings and mountains. The emphasis in combat is on ballistics rather than stealth, but like with most third-person games, the player has complete control over how they choose to play.

InFamous 2 (2011)

However, despite its flaws, InFamous 2 is an excellent superhero game in the third-person adventure genre. It’s up to the player to decide if they wish to be evil or on the side of the good ones in the game’s campaign.

inFamous 2 (Video Game 2011) - IMDb

Fighting is chaotic, similar to the rebooted Tomb Raider series, with a constant barrage of attacks that the protagonist must either avoid or respond to explosively. There isn’t as much exploration to be done here, but the platforming is really unique due to the abilities of the protagonist.

FAQS:

Are Tomb Raider and Uncharted similar?

When it comes to the new Tomb Raider games, they borrow heavily from Uncharted, but Tomb Raider is M-rated, dark, and brutally violent. Tomb Raider’s newest iteration is more like Uncharted than it is its own IP, despite being more than a decade old. However, they are both based on Indiana Jones.

Is there a real life Lara Croft?

As opposed to Nate’s technique of using the environment around him, Lara’s has been extremely effective in turning the tide in her favor via speed. Even supernatural adversaries have been unable to grab a hold of her at times due to her speed and agility.
