Since the release of games like Doom and Quake, the first-person shooter genre has flourished. The shooters of today are a lot more frantic and fast-paced, requiring players to have lightning reflexes and quick trigger fingers.

As one of the most played types of video games, first-person shooters see a steady stream of new releases.

As such, we have included a list of some of the most recommended first-person shooters for your perusal.

New releases will be added to this list in the near future, so be sure to check back.

Rage 2

Consoles/Systems: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Computer

For Rage 2, you’ll be controlling Walker, the lone remaining ranger in a world overrun by deadly mutants. This sequel is set 30 years after the original game. The story begins when Walker’s house is attacked and destroyed by a corrupt military organization known as the Authority. This drives Walker to seek vengeance.

In the game, you’ll use futuristic weapons and tools alongside special abilities called Nanotrites. The flight stick is one such weapon; its blades can slash through an opponent’s flesh before returning to the thrower.

RAGE 2 on Steam

Bright Memory

PC-Based System

The protagonist of Bright Memory is named Shelia, and she is an agent for the Natural Science Research Organization (SRO) who is tasked with stopping a shadowy military organization from reanimating extinct creatures for use as weapons. The game is currently in Early Access on Steam.

Shelia must use her martial arts training to keep herself alive long enough to learn the truth while caught in the crossfire between modern technology and an ancient civilization. The game’s mechanics are reminiscent of those found in games like Shadow Warrior, with an emphasis on the use of swords, guns, and the unique abilities that Shelia learns throughout the course of the adventure.

Killing Floor 2

Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Personal Computer

Since its inception, the Killing Floor series has received regular updates, and Killing Floor 2 continues to do so even in 2019. In this game, up to six players band together to accomplish various goals amidst onslaughts of zombies known as “Zeds.”

KF2 is an exciting first-person shooter with fast and aggressive gameplay, and teamwork is crucial, especially on harder difficulties. Since its 2016 launch, developer Tripwire has steadily expanded the game’s roster with new weapons, enemies, and player versus player (PVP) content.

Metro Exodus

System Requirements: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Personal Computer

Over the course of the series, Metro games have steadily improved, but the latest installment, Metro Exodus, is the best of the bunch. The game has improved current-gen visuals, a more focused story, and stealth-based gameplay, in addition to larger sandbox environments to explore.

You take on the role of Artyom, the beloved Russian scavenger from the post-apocalyptic future, and explore the ruined landscape of the former Russian Federation, where you’ll face off against new dangers and adversaries. Due to the scarcity of ammunition and other supplies, you will need to conserve what you have as much as possible.

Apex Legends

PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Because of the success of battle royale games, many studios, including Respawn, have decided to create their own entries in the genre. In Apex Legends, players form squads of three and parachute onto a vast map that features open fields, compact villages, and high-tech installations.

Finding the next best weapon, attachment, ammo, or piece of armor is a never-ending quest in this game, as is searching containers and the bodies of fallen enemies for these necessities. You won’t find any fried chicken here, just the same talented developers behind Titanfall’s shooting mechanics.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Personal Computer

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is the sequel to The New Order and takes place in a world where the Nazis triumph over the Allies in World War II. Within the game, you take control of BJ Blazkowicz as he leads a misfit team in an effort to topple the Nazi regime in America.

The player has access to a wide variety of weapons and abilities, including the ability to dual-wield and vault over cover. The most striking aspect of New Colossus is how accurately it portrays its dystopian Americana, complete with KKK members casually strolling through city blocks and propaganda posters adorning every available wall space.

FarCry 5

System Requirements: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Personal Computer

Ubisoft’s latest first-person shooter (FPS), Far Cry 5, is the latest entry in the series’ long history. It is open-world and takes place in Montana, USA, and aspires to be as thrilling as a Hollywood blockbuster, complete with plenty of explosions and bear mauling.

Some have said the story isn’t as strong as in previous Far Cry games, but the game still has the polished shooting mechanics fans have come to expect from the franchise. In addition to a solo or co-op campaign, FC5 also includes a map editor where players can make their own challenges and share them with the community.

Rainbow Six Siege

PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Siege’s success has skyrocketed since the game shifted to a live service model, as the tactical shooter’s player base continues to grow and Ubisoft Montreal regularly releases new content. There is a large and active community of both casual and competitive players because of the game’s variety of multiplayer modes and class-based operators.

Siege’s ability to generate tension during matches and highlight teamwork sets it apart from other online first-person shooters. Some operators have strong counters to others due to skill disparity, and this forces opposing teams to come up with creative solutions to close the gap and secure victory.

Overwatch

Sony Playstation 4, Microsoft Xbox One, and PC

While it’s true that Overwatch wasn’t the first hero shooter, it’s hard to argue with the fact that it’s the most visually striking and accessible. This is not to say that the game is simple, however, as each hero has a unique function, and it may take some time to become proficient with a given character’s arsenal.

Blizzard implements a number of measures to prevent the game from becoming stale, such as seasonal events and unlockable character skins and emotes. There are currently 30 playable characters in Overwatch, and the game has a thriving e-sports scene.

Doom

PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC

We all know what to expect from a Doom game: extreme violence, gore, overpowered weapons, and a generic story that serves as an excuse to rip demons in half. The 2016 Doom remake by id Software maintains all those features while also adding new elements to the series.

Doom features stunning new visuals and an expanded upgrade system that lets you customize your character and arsenal to your heart’s content. For the first time ever, the game lets you put on a show by killing enemies in spectacular and gory ways in what are called “Glory Kills.”

Dusk

PC-Based System

Though it may not seem like it, Dusk was actually released in 2018. Both visually and mechanically, the game owes a great deal to popular first-person shooters from the 1990s, such as Doom and Quake. Dusk is not like other first-person shooters because it uses a fresh take on familiar ideas.

Your character’s movement and gunplay are very responsive, allowing you to move quickly and fire rapidly. While the game’s blocky 3D visuals may turn off some players, even a short time spent with Dusk reveals just how compelling the gameplay can be. The game’s objectives are typically as straightforward as locating a missing key or defeating a specific foe; however, Dusk’s environments are rife with hidden items and puzzles.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

PS4, Xbox One, and PC

The popularity of battle royale games had peaked by the time Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode was released, but it was still cool to see how Call of Duty updated the formula. You and up to 99 other players jump out of a plane onto the map and fight to the death until only one player is left.

Blackout mode is distinct from previous entries in the series in a number of ways, the most notable of which is its massive map size. It also has a wider variety of weapons and more consistent frame rates than other popular battle royale games.

Prey

PS4, Xbox One, and PC

There are elements of stealth, survival, and role-playing games in Prey’s first-person shooter gameplay. As Morgan Yu, a human on the Talos 1 space station, you must survive after the station is overrun by the ferocious alien Typhon. Your objective is to defeat the Typhon and learn the truth about Talos 1 by using whatever means necessary to stay alive, including gathering resources and using weapons.

There are a lot of options available to the player in this game. Morgan’s gender, the weapons and upgrades you use, and other choices you make in the game’s world all affect how the story unfolds. The alien Typhon you meet in Prey are some of the game’s best features. These aliens come in a variety of sub-species, including the shape-shifting Mimics. These spider-like aliens are able to assume the appearance of everyday objects in the open world, sneaking up on their prey at the most inopportune moments.

Borderlands 2

System Requirements: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Personal Computer

Borderlands 2 is much more ambitious than its predecessor in every respect, and it shows in the game’s vivid depiction of Pandora’s world. There is more depth to the characters and the dialogue between them has increased, there are new types of enemies to keep things fresh, and there are more optional quests to complete, allowing you to go off the beaten path.

The game’s cel-shaded visual style will likely divide players more than anything else. While not all textures look their best, Borderlands 2’s art style can either improve or ruin the experience, depending on your tastes. The game is a vast improvement over its predecessor because it doesn’t try anything new but rather streamlines ideas from the first game.

Destiny 2: Forsaken

PS4, Xbox One, and PC

The initial reception to Destiny 2 was positive, but the game has since been panned for having unsatisfying end-game content and an underwhelming first expansion in the form of Curse of Osiris. Since then, Bungie has been hard at work improving their first-person shooter, and the Forsaken expansion demonstrates that they are making progress.

Forsaken not only improves the story, but also the gameplay by allowing players to switch between different types of guns in each weapon slot. Destiny has always had the best shooting feel, so it’s encouraging to see the game in a better place in 2019, and hopefully Bungie will continue to build on the success of Forsaken.

HALO INFINITE

When it comes to Halo games, nothing beats the thrill of mowing down enemies with a battle rifle, tearing across the landscape in a Warthog, or slicing through enemies with an Energy Sword, and now PC players can experience all of that and more. Masterfully (sorry) channeling the spirit of the original Halo games, while adding new elements like a grapple hook and open-world exploration, Halo Infinite succeeds where its predecessors failed.

Our review of Halo Infinite praised the game’s presentation and the emotional weight of Master Chief’s journey across the single-player campaign, and the multiplayer mode is a lot of fun thanks to Halo’s unique formula of arena-shooter style matches, extended gunfights, and Halo Infinite weapon spawns.

CALL OF DUTY: VANGUARD

The latest Call of Duty game, Vanguard, takes players back to World War II, but instead of focusing on the European theater, it transports them to the Pacific, North Africa, and the Eastern front for the single-player campaign. This campaign’s narrative is based on a timeline in which World War II unfolds differently than it actually did.

The zombies co-op story mode in Vanguard is a frenetic addition to the Call of Duty series that continues the Dark Aether storyline from previous games. You and your friends must traverse portals and fight off hordes of zombies; after each wave, you’ll regroup at a Stalingrad base where you’ll be able to improve your equipment, unlock useful bonuses, and equip devastating abilities. Vanguard’s multiplayer mode increases the weapon setup to allow for up to ten attachments on each weapon, which is great news for players who enjoy tinkering and experimenting with attachments. Our reviewer, Ian Boudreau, calls Call of Duty: Vanguard “the most entertaining entry in the latest triptych.”

QUAKE (2021)

As one of the first first-person shooters ever made, 1996’s Quake is a pillar of the industry. There have been a plethora of “boomer shooters” released in recent years, all of which attempt to recreate the retro aesthetic, maze-like levels, and rapid-fire gunplay of iD Software’s classic 3D games.

Nothing beats the original, but in case you missed it the first time around, Bethesda has released a remastered version of Quake during QuakeCon 2021. It features stunning new visuals and even brand new episodes. The gothic, medieval, dark fantasy setting in Quake has never looked better, but the gameplay is still the same, so you’ll still need to practice your strafe jumps.

BLACK MESA

Black Mesa is an updated version of Half-Life 1 made by fans from the ground up in the most recent iteration of the Source game engine. Black Mesa’s 1.0 release in 2020 was the culmination of a 15-year development cycle, but the wait was definitely worthwhile. The single-player campaign has been reimagined for the remake, with the inclusion of new features and the removal of old ones to make for a more streamlined experience. The developers even made their own longer version of Xen, the Alien planet featured at the end of Half Life 1 but cut short by Valve.

Putting aside what it did for PC gaming, Half-Life 1 is undeniably a spectacular game, but the gameplay isn’t perfect; fortunately, the changes made in Black Mesa fix this. For those who haven’t played the original Half-Life but are curious about what they’re missing, Black Mesa is the best way to experience this groundbreaking first-person shooter once again.

DOOM ETERNAL

Doom Eternal takes the formula of 2016’s breakout hit and cranks it up to eleven. The developers could have quickly produced a sequel that was mechanically identical to Doom 2016, but instead they improved every major system. The game’s pace has been increased across the board, from the variety of weapons at your disposal to the freedom with which you can move.

Stronger foes with their own set of advantages and disadvantages await you now that you’ve leveled up. Doom 2016 allowed you to play with a single weapon if you wanted to, but Doom Eternal discourages players from doing so. If you don’t use the various weapons and equipment at your disposal to eliminate your enemies, you’ll never have enough supplies.

Doom Eternal takes cues from the best action games to become a fast-paced shooter that challenges players’ imaginations as they slaughter legions of hell’s most vile monsters. Our 2020 Game of the Year was Doom Eternal, and with good reason.

OVERWATCH

You could liken it to League of Legends or Team Fortress 2 if you like. Overwatch is similar enough to both to draw inspiration from them, yet distinctive enough to make it take months for players to figure out the optimal character combinations.

Because of the emphasis on teamwork in Overwatch, it’s not particularly important to know who killed you or how many headshots you racked up. It’s more impressive to show how you used a variety of skills to win a round, such as Mercy healing a key sniper at the capture point, Reinhart shielding the payload, etc.

While it lacked some key features upon release, Overwatch is constantly receiving updates and new heroes. As a result of Overwatch League, the game’s e-sports potential has also become more clear. Even if you’re not into putting in eight-hour practice sessions, you can still enjoy Overwatch because of how easy it is to jump in and start shooting.

COUNTER-STRIKE: GLOBAL OFFENSIVE

The experience of entering the world of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for the first time is akin to plunging headfirst into the meat grinder of modern warfare. You’ll be up against pros who have been exploring similar environments for a decade or more. You will be killed by snipers with tens of thousands of kills on their Scout. Players who are so well versed in CS:GO console commands that they could do it in their sleep will punish you by making you sit out the rest of the round while they enjoy your misery.

If that’s the case, then please explain why you’d rather play Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. For the simple reason that climbing to the top of the leaderboards represents hard work rewarded by a sense of accomplishment. Furthermore, it features excellent level design. Regular CS:GO updates forever keep this shooter fresh, which is why you’ll still find servers running old maps like Dust 2 day in and day out.

To counter this, however, Global Offensive is a brand new game that features cutting-edge gameplay mechanics. Now, much like in Team Fortress 2, it is supported in part by revenue generated from the sale of in-game cosmetics and weapon skins. The automatic matchmaking feature steers you away from the dedicated servers that helped make the series what it is today. Plus, there are tiers, so that the elite can wear their status as a badge of honor similar to the medals awarded to veterans.

HALF-LIFE 2

Half-Life 2 is often regarded as the best PC games of all time because it is so much more than just an improvement on its superb predecessor. These acclaims are not without merit. Thanks to a more assured team, Half-Life 2 is much more ambitious than its predecessor.

It’s a blockbuster, but it’s also a smart one, and everything about it is bigger than the 1998 original. There are well-implemented artificial intelligence companions, fully realized characters who do more than just die comically, and physics that make the world feel lived in and real.

Once again, Valve’s environments are stunning. They are built with the same care and attention to detail as Half-Life’s, despite typically being larger and more open. And importantly, they have not been forgotten, whether it be the haunted streets of Ravenholm or the ominous Citadel that towers over City 17 like a tyrannical fortress of steel and glass. Some of the shine may have worn off with time, but the game is still visually stunning and compelling despite its age.

RAINBOW SIX SIEGE

Thanks to Ubisoft’s dedication to the game, Rainbow Six Siege has evolved into a much more formidable foe since its 2015 release. Now, it has become one of the best PC shooting games thanks to its thriving e-sports scene, a steady stream of Rainbow Six Siege operators, and some of the best multiplayer gameplay available.

From the moment you begin scouting an area with your drone (hoping your enemies don’t spot it before you can find the hostage) to your final attempt to save the day by shooting down walls and smashing through the ceiling, every moment of Siege’s boxed-in battles is fraught with tension and danger. Because of its asymmetrical multiplayer and tactical flexibility, each round is unique.

It’s not just a series of gunfights; it’s a game of manipulation and control, where you try to get your opponents to react in certain ways while keeping your own team cohesive. You can never feel safe because attacks can come from any direction and often occur simultaneously. In Siege, the destructible environments make you think on your feet and trust no wall, despite the fact that you may have spent your entire life hiding behind them.

Though the learning curve for Siege is steep, the Rainbow Six Siege Starter Edition makes it easy and affordable for new players to join the fray. Those who can stand Rainbow’s brutal gameplay will be pleased to know that Ubisoft Montreal’s shooter is not going anywhere, and that fresh seasons and content are constantly being added.

ESCAPE FROM TARKOV

Countless first-person shooters claim to be realistic, but few match Escape from Tarkov’s developers’ dedication to accuracy when it comes to firearms, attachments, and ballistics modeling. In Escape from Tarkov, not only are there more than 60 firearms at your disposal, but you can also customize each one to the point where it no longer resembles its stock form. For each type of ammunition, there is a wide variety of barrels, mounts, scopes, flashlights, foregrips, pistol grips, handguards, muzzle attachments, stocks, charging handles, magazines, receivers, gas blocks, and rounds available for swapping out. When looting, you will never find two weapons that are identical.

As a result, many gun malfunctions occur, especially among new players and those who aren’t particularly gun-savvy. Once you’ve spent countless rubles on unnecessary add-ons and figured out how to attach everything, however, you’ll start to develop feelings of attachment to your unique creation. This last point is crucial because in Escape from Tarkov, should you fall in battle and be looted by the enemy, you will lose everything you brought with you—including your prized assault rifle.

A new player to Escape from Tarkov might be put off by the game’s strict rules, but while it’s true that it’s simple to lose valuable equipment in a raid, it’s also possible to enter a raid with nothing more than a pistol and come out with some of the game’s best armor and weapons. With a player-driven economy, even something as seemingly worthless as a statue can be bartered for a shiny new HK416.

The seamless integration of PvP and PvE in EfT also sets it apart from the other first-person shooters and multiplayer games on this list. Each raid takes place on a massive map, with human players spawning at the map’s periphery and AI foes spawning in at strategic locations where valuable loot can be found. You have up to 40 minutes from the start of the match to eliminate your opponents, loot their supplies, and make it to one of the match’s extraction points. Only the equipment you insured before your death will be returned to you if you perish. Exactly how does one get out of Tarkov, then? It’s extremely unlikely that you’ll make it through a raid unscathed, given that extraction points are always located on the opposite side of the map from where you spawned in.

TITANFALL 2

The multiplayer in this shooter sequel from EA and Respawn is so well-balanced that it quickly rose to prominence as one of the year’s best PC releases. Titanfall 2’s mix of crunchy, industrial mech brawling and nimble pilot combat is unlike anything else. Our Titanfall 2 campaign review will show you that the game’s single-player mode is not only a great way to learn the ropes of this FPS, but also a delightful story in its own right.

The story mode does not try to outdo the gameplay with any blockbuster-level spectacle or epic setpieces. Instead, the gameplay mechanics provide all the excitement: charging headfirst into a group of enemies and blowing them away with a few unnervingly satisfying blasts from your shotgun is thrilling every time. As we saw in our review of the PC port of Titanfall 2, the PC version holds up very well.

Titanfall 2’s competitive multiplayer features a wide range of playable classes, and the game’s single-player campaign has also been expanded. Titanfall 2 is a huge improvement over the original game and a breath of fresh air in the otherwise stale mech games genre.

Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale Apex Legends takes place in the same universe as Titanfall, but there has been no announcement of a Titanfall 3. Although wall-running has been removed, this developer’s legacy lives on in Apex Legends through such weapons as the Mozambique and Hemlock.

LEFT 4 DEAD 2

Deadites created by Valve are unique. They come at you like waves in Left 4 Dead 2, climbing walls and jumping across crevices. They’re not alone, though; the highly-evolved zombies that accompany them are specials that make you band together. A Smoker will use its long tongue to pull you into an alley, where you will be surrounded by regular zombies. An approaching Hunter will slam you to the ground and rip out your throat. In order to completely submerge you in green slime, a Boomer will charge straight at your face and explode right in front of your eyes.

Zombies and Left 4 Dead 2 have been around for a while, but the game’s tension, level design, and countless mods keep it fresh. Even now, it stands as a high-quality PC cooperative title.

TEAM FORTRESS 2

Angry cartoon men capture briefcases, guard bombs, and occupy nodes in this extra-shooty, social-status-based affair. When it comes to first-person shooters on the PC, Team Fortress 2 is undeniably one of the best. It has also progressed thanks to the plethora of user-made content, maps, modes, and new Team Fortress 2 equipment that has helped keep the FPS game fresh.

This time around, the premise is the same as always: choose a member of a cast of nine to represent you and join a team. There are several game modes, such as “Capture the Flag,” “King of the Hill,” and “Payload,” in which one team advances a bomb along a rail track while the other team desperately tries to stop them. Overwatch may now use it as its showcase mode, but it was perfected in Team Fortress 2.

VALORANT

Fans of CS:GO and Overwatch will feel right at home in Riot’s hero shooter Valorant, but that’s not a bad thing, as we explain in our review. When compared to other first-person shooters, it’s easy to see why Valorant has risen to the top. The roster of heroes is full of optimistic faces, and they all have at least a few skills that are both practical and well-rounded. The weapon and economy systems are lifted wholesale from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The AWP is renamed the Op, which is essentially the same thing. Clever.

Games are tense and call for a high level of expertise, accuracy, and teamwork. If your aim is off or your reactions are slow, you’re in for a tough match, just like in CS:GO, but at least you won’t be playing against an adult who has been practicing Dust II since they were a baby. If you’re looking for a new competitive scene, Valorant is a great choice; if you don’t want to commit to a full match, the Spike Rush mode is faster, more casual, and just as much fun as any other first-person shooter.

UNREAL TOURNAMENT

During a time when id was the undisputed king of first-person shooters, Epic’s success with Unreal was particularly noteworthy; however, it was the company’s 1999 release of Unreal Tournament that truly established it as a force to be reckoned with. Although it shared the same basic premise as Quake Arena, Tournament was an alternative for players desiring more polish.

The BioRifle, which turns toxic sludge into a lethal weapon, is one of the most interesting tools in the game. Even better, it can be used as a gelatinous landmine by being charged up and then released in a large bulb. On the other hand, there’s Redeemer, a rocket launcher that can hurl a controllable thermonuclear warhead at your foes. The Ripper, another option, can be used to cut through obstacles by firing saw blades that bounce off of walls. To be the best in the arena, you’ll need to learn how to make the most of each gun’s unique strengths and secondary fire modes.

There is a lot of memorable mad architecture in both old and new Tournament maps. Nothing beats the rush of leaping in DM-Morpheus’s low gravity between the city’s three skyscraping towers, especially if you can gib an opponent mid-air, sending their blood spraying across the sky.

SPLITGATE: ARENA WARFARE

Veteran first-person shooter players may tire of the tried-and-true formula after a while. If that’s a close enough description of how you feel, Splitgate: Arena Warfare might be just the thing to get you excited about this subgenre again. It borrows Halo’s familiar multiplayer setup for a science fiction first-person shooter, but adds a fresh spin with the Portal gun mechanics.

In a strategic sense, this means you’ll be taking a completely new tack in battle. Rather than hole up in a secluded spot from which you have no way out, you can now construct an exit wormhole whenever you like. With the portals, you can set up ambushes at any point on the map and fire at your enemies with ease. If you’ve ever wished Portal had more of a focus on action, then you’ll love Splitgate.

There you have it, the top PC first-person shooters. It’s a great time to be a fan of first-person shooters, as many upcoming PC games are of this genre (we can still hope for a Half-Life 3 release date, right?). Keep practicing those virtual headshots to keep that trigger finger loose. The Nazis, zombies, and cyberterrorists won’t kill themselves, after all.
