The History of Fallout

The Fallout games have been out for a long time. The original Fallout game came out in 1997, and its sequel came out the following year. After that, the series went on indefinite hiatus, releasing a handful of spin-offs but no further main entries, for the better part of a decade.

At that time, the franchise was taken over by gaming powerhouse Bethesda. With the release of Fallout 3 in 2008, the Fallout franchise returned to the spotlight. Fallout 3, available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, was the first game in the series to fully transition from a top-down, old-school RPG to a 3D open world.

Soon after, Bethesda released the wildly successful sequel Fallout: New Vegas, which built upon the success of Fallout 3 by adding new features and refining the gameplay.

Fallout followed the gaming industry into the next generation. For the PS4 and Xbox One, the Fallout series began with Fallout 4, and the most recent installment, Fallout 76, was released in 2018.

Where Do the Fallout Games Take Place?

A post-apocalyptic setting A nuclear war has decimated American society. Most Fallout games put you in the role of a vault dweller, someone who weathered the nuclear holocaust in a fortified underground bunker. Your adventure starts when you break out of the vault.

Your first impressions of the “old USA” will be that it has seen better days. After a nuclear war destroyed everything, the remaining citizens worked together to rebuild society. Life in a post-apocalyptic America presents its fair share of difficulties. There are ghouls (Fallout’s version of zombies), killer robots, bandits, and more lurking about in the Wasteland.

Several organizations and movements call the Wasteland their home as well. The Brotherhood of Steel, a paramilitary order intent on retrieving obsolete machinery, might cross your path. Or you could run into the Enclave, who consider themselves the rightful rulers of the Wasteland because they are the direct descendants of the US government before the war.

Even brand new nations have sprung up in the Wasteland, such as the New California Republic, an oasis of civility in an otherwise brutal world.

Gameplay in Fallout

You can assume any identity you like in the Fallout games.

You’ll begin by customizing your protagonist’s gender, physical traits, and skill set. It’s up to you whether your character is a mechanical genius who can break into anything, or a charismatic master negotiator who can talk their way out of any jam. The horizon is truly infinite in Fallout.

These days’ Fallout games are first-person shooter role-playing video games. That means your perspective will be primarily that of your character. A significant part of Fallout is developing your character by acquiring new weapons and armor. The clothes you’re wearing when you emerge from your vault are all you’ll have, but you’ll quickly begin scavenging and collecting new armor, weapons, and abilities.

However, combat isn’t the only focus of Fallout. There are a lot of people you’ll meet along the way, each with their own story and goals. The events of Fallout can be altered based on the decisions you make. You will have the opportunity to shape the Wasteland through your choices and the resolution of conflicts that arise throughout the game.

Fallout 76 engine

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4 share the same game engine that was used to create Fallout 76. This is the Creation Engine, developed by Bethesda and based on the Gamebryo engine, which powers games like Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. While this engine can be quite demanding at maximum settings, it is relatively forgiving of older GPUs when run at low to medium settings.

Consider Skyrim for the Nintendo Switch. The role-playing game ran smoothly on Nintendo’s portable thanks to the power of a single Nvidia Tegra X1 processor. The Tegra X1 from Nvidia has a Maxwell GPU with only 256 CUDA cores and a clock speed of 1GHz. If Skyrim can be played smoothly on a tiny chip designed for low-demand mobile workloads, then most discrete Nvidia Maxwell GPUs / AMD R9 200-series and above should have no trouble with Fallout 76.

However, Fallout 76 will feature some adjustments to the Creation Engine’s tried-and-true formula. We don’t know how much of an impact the game’s new rendering, lighting, and landscaping (blowing the map to bits) technology will have on performance until at least the PC beta goes live in Fallout 76.

Fallout 76 minimum system requirements

The official system requirements and recommendations for Fallout 76 have been released by Bethesda, and they are noticeably more demanding than those for the comparatively based Fallout 4.

Fallout 76 system requirements:

• Computer Central Processing Unit: Intel Core i5 6600k or AMD Ryzen 3 1300X (or equivalent, 3.5 GHz)
• Stack Size: 8GB
• System Requirements: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit only).
• For the graphics card, you’ll need at least a Nvidia GTX 780 3GB or an AMD Radeon R9 285 2GB.
• Free space on disk is 60GB.

Although the Sandy Bridge Intel i5 2300’s four cores and four threads are sufficient for running Fallout 4, they are insufficient for Fallout 76. Indicating that the online vision for Fallout will be a bit more demanding on your CPU, Bethesda has raised the minimum requirement to an i7 on the Intel side, though thankfully the GPU requirements have remained fairly relaxed.

Fallout 76 recommended system requirements

There isn’t much wiggle room between low and high-end CPU configurations in Fallout 76, so if you want to play it as intended, you’ll need to beef up your graphics card for the job.

System requirements for Fallout 76 are as follows:

• Computer Central Processing Unit: Intel Core i7-4790, 3.6 GHz; AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, 3.5 GHz
• Stack Size: 8GB
• Operating System: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit only)
• GPU: 4GB Nvidia GTX 970 / 4GB AMD R9 290X
• 60GB of available storage space

The base clock speed of Intel’s Haswell i7 4790 processor is 3.6 GHz, with a boost to 4 GHz. This chip has eight threads thanks to hyperthreading, so it should perform admirably alongside your graphics card. Having 16 GB of RAM is also a good idea.

You’ll need a Nvidia GTX 1060 3GB or RX 570 4GB to play Fallout 76 with its recommended settings and at a playable frame rate. The bombs shouldn’t shatter these cards too much.

There’s still hope if your computer doesn’t have the specs needed to play Fallout 76. If you’re having trouble maintaining 30 frames per second in-game, you might want to dial back some of the game’s more demanding settings before investing in a new graphics card.

One of the most taxing things for your computer to handle in a game is shadows. While it may seem like your GPU could handle a black splotch, disabling shadows entirely can help you save some valuable framerate.

One of the biggest performance issues is reflections. Despite the fact that reflections are a great way to increase the game’s realism, your GPU will have to work very hard to bring life to reflections in Fallout 76’s open world. If you want Fallout 76 to run smoother, turn off reflections.

Some anti-aliasing (AA) techniques are significantly more resource intensive than others, but the vast majority of games support multiple AA techniques. Turning off anti-aliasing is the easiest setting, but if that’s too ugly for you, FXAA is a low-overhead alternative that should help Fallout 76 run smoother.
