Final Fantasy Tactics has long been regarded as one of the best JRPGs of all time, starting with the PS1 version of FFT and the GBA version of FFT Advance.

The turn-based RPG would fall into obscurity due to Square Enix (previously Square Softdesire )’s to adapt the series for mobile devices.

Fans of the original will remember how groundbreaking the series was for its day, allowing players to explore a 40-60-hour campaign loaded with exciting side missions and secrets to uncover as they progressed.

Several independent studios have attempted to replicate FFT’s unique recipe throughout the years, with mixed results.

The greatest games like Final Fantasy Tactics to play if you’re in the mood for turn-based tactics gameplay will be highlighted here.

We’ll be adding new games to this list all the time, so be sure to check back often. While you’re here, browse our other carefully curated lists:

Tactics V: “Obsidian Brigade”

From Nothing Game Studios is the developer.

PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and macOS are all supported.

FFT is a classic turn-based RPG that Tactics V: “Obsidian Brigade” pays tribute to with its retro-inspired turn-based gameplay.

Tactics V: "Obsidian Brigade" Gameplay (PC HD) [1080p60FPS] - YouTube

Handcrafted 3D components have been modified to fit a 2D isometric perspective, which is most apparent in the game’s presentation. With this method of animation, sprite-based RPG characters and landscapes look and feel much more alive.

As the Obsidian Brigade, a party of adventurers, travel around the realm of Auria, they encounter and battle a variety of opponents from rival clans. A complex turn-based combat system with a wide variety of aiming methods, character actions, and reactions will be shown to players over the course of the game’s 20-hour campaign.

Tactical combat are made more difficult by the inclusion of Tactics V’s 13 character classes, their 50 talents, and 140 special abilities.

Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark

Architect/Engineer: 6 Eyes Studio

PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and macOS are all supported.

Fell Seal takes a lot of cues from FFT, including its tactical turn-based combat and sophisticated class-based management system. Taking place in a steampunk world, the game is governed by the Immortal Council, a collection of immortals.

Arbiters are mortal officials of justice who are entrusted by these immortal monarchs to keep an eye on the nation and defend its residents from harm.

You take on the role of Kyrie, an Arbiter agent tasked with uncovering the immoral activities that underlie the Immortal Council’s control.

There are over 20 classes in the game, each with their own set of abilities and skills that may be unlocked as you play. You are encouraged to grow and experiment with your party members by resting them when they fall in battle in Fell Seal, rather than a standard permadeath system.

Alvora Tactics

Rad Codex is the developer.

Computer (PC)

Alvora Tactics is an independent role-playing game that pays homage to classics like Final Fantasy Tactics while also including more contemporary elements like destructible terrain and environments that are produced both manually and programmatically. Finally, a tactical RPG with deep combat and skill systems that are still understandable.

In this game, you take command of a group of warriors on a mission to defeat the Great Serpent Alvora and all of its adversaries. 10 character races, 23 classes and more than 200 skills that can be improved over time are all included in the game’s extensive roster.

While Voidspire Tactics did not make our list of retro-style RPGs due to its similarity to Alvora, it’s still worth your time to check out.

Sword Legacy: Omen

the Firecast Studio is in charge of creating it

PC and macOS are the two available platforms.

From the perspective of Uther, an unforgiving knight on a journey to locate the legendary Excalibur sword and rescue his kidnapped lover, Sword Legacy: Omen is a dark and gritty recreation of the narrative of King Arthur.

Sorcerer Merlin, along with his band of eccentric companions, guide players through the kingdom of Broken Britannia, which has been devastated by the killing of its leader.

While the class and ability management systems in Sword Legacy differ from those in FFT, the game’s minute-to-minute fighting has a lot more nuance. Fighting against hordes of plague-infected foes and corrupted knights who may quickly sap the strength of your party and send them into a state of fear is a common occurrence in the game’s battles.

Fortunately, the game allows you to customize your hero’s abilities to suit your playstyle, and there are numerous ways to bridge the gap between the two, including the use of environmental traps like explosive barrels and ledges to eliminate adversaries.

Wildermyth

Worldwalker Games is the company behind this title.

PC and macOS are the two available platforms.

Tactical role-playing game Wildermyth has characters and settings rendered in 2D papercraft style. Using teamwork and positioning in conjunction with characters’ special powers and objects in the environment, combat is a key part of the game.

In order to get an advantage over the opponent, expert players might utilize methods such as walling and flanking.

Although it may not appear so, the game is heavily influenced by classic tactics games like FFT, giving players complete control over their character’s appearance, relationships, and more.

A fresh group of procedurally created heroes joins your party every time you play, and they will develop in stature and personality as you progress through the game.

Wargroove

Chucklefish is the creator of this app.

PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and macOS are all supported.

Wargroove is a turn-based tactics game that acts as a spiritual successor to the Advance Wars series, exchanging its modern military design for a fantasy-themed cast and setting.

The 2D game takes place on the island continent of Aurania, where you control one of fifteen commanders who wage war against various groups.

All of the commanders have their own personalities and goals, as well as an unique action known as a “Groove,” which can change the battlefield and make conflicts more exciting for the AI.

Unique campaign structure of Wargroove and a custom map and mission editor significantly enhance replayability.

XCOM 2

Firaxis Games is the developer.

PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Mac OS X

XCOM 2: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based strategy game. An anti-alien military rebellion is shown in this sequel, which takes place 20 years after its predecessor.

The Avenger, a new mobile base operation that can issue real-time commands to squad members, is in the hands of the players. In between missions, the Avenger can be used to research enemy tactics and new gadgets, weaponry, and technology.

It is possible to recruit additional warriors belonging to a variety of classes with specific talents and skills that may be unlocked and upgraded over time as you travel through the game’s 30-plus-hour campaign.

XCOM 2 has a strong emphasis on player customization, letting you customize the names and personalities of your soldiers as well as their outfits and weaponry.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Intelligent Systems is the company behind this project.

Switch is the preferred platform.

Although FFT and FE have always been targeted at two different demographics, the two games share a lot of gameplay similarities. To prepare for a 48-hour campaign, players in Nintendo’s newest strategic RPG must train new recruits into battle-hardened warriors.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses | Nintendo Switch games | Games | Nintendo

Your first task will be to train pupils in the field and manage their daily schedule after pledging allegiance to one of three factions: Black Eagles, Blue Lions, or Golden Deer.

There is a wide range of tasks that may be used to improve your students’ combat prowess and help you build an unstoppable army in the game.

It is in many ways a return to the series’ roots, with weapon durability and permadeath returning, along with improved aesthetics, in Three Houses.

Disgaea 5 Complete

Nippon Ichi Software is the developer.

Systems supported include the following: PC, PS4, and the Nintendo Switch

It was about the time of the initial FFT release that the Disgaea series began to take off. Disgaea 5 Complete is an excellent place to start if you’re looking for a tactics RPG that lets you fine-tune each character’s build to your heart’s content.

This allows you to explore and come up with insane setups capable of dealing enormous amounts of damage, focusing on survivability, or finding the proper balance between the two. It takes a significant amount of time to learn and understand all of the game’s many, many intricate concepts.

Last but not least, the Disgaea series is noted for its offbeat, often outright absurd tone, which may not be to everyone’s taste in FFT.

Wintermoor Tactics Club

EVC is the company behind this application.

PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

Wintermoor Tactics Club is portrayed as a visual novel tactics game that incorporates both story and gameplay into a cohesive whole. Wintermoor Academy’s many cliques are broken down by a group of outcasts with special abilities, and they must deal with their own personal issues as they do so.

Leveling up your characters will unlock new abilities that allow you to win battles more easily as the difficulty increases.

More characters will join your group as your club’s influence grows, giving you the opportunity to experiment with different team compositions and new methods.

‘Ogre Battle’ (series)

This tactical RPG game’s Ogre Battle is a classic. When it was released on the SNES in the mid-90s, it became an instant hit with gamers. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, a full-fledged remake released on the PSP, is the series’ best entry to date. As you travel through the Kingdom of Valeria, expect to run against a variety of opponents. Ogre Battle is the closest tactical RPG to Final Fantasy Tactics that I can think of.

Fire Emblem

Marth, Roy, Ike, and the rest of the Fire Emblem group have appeared in the Super Smash Bros. series for longtime Nintendo fans. In addition to battling other Nintendo icons and administering justice to the bad forces who seek to destroy their own kingdoms, these master swordsmen are really brilliant at what they do best. Finally, the series’ very first game can be played through on the Nintendo Switch, and there are plenty of other portable franchise titles worth replaying. In the latest Fire Emblem: Three Houses, you’ll be leading a group of youthful troops into combat, and it’s a solid, enjoyable experience.

Front Mission

In Front Mission, you’re thrust into a futuristic world of huge mechs called Wanzers and cutting-edge technology rather than medieval soldiers in a mythical nation. All of the series’ major strategic RPGs are well worth playing, but the DS edition of the very first game is particularly noteworthy. Front Mission’s key selling points are the ability to control every aspect of your favorite Wanzers and use them against the other mechas in your path of destruction.

Disgaea

The Disgaea games are out of this world. In a game where talking penguins say the word “dood” on a frequent basis, it’s evident that the developers aren’t afraid to experiment. You’ll be able to send your units flying across the battlefield in the game’s conflicts. In addition, the damage statistics might skyrocket as your party members level up. You can find much to enjoy in the overall zaniness of the Disgaea series because its tales will always be wild and full of fun.

TROUBLESHOOTER: Abandoned Children

As far as strategy RPGs go, this is the first one we’ve come across that adheres to a seasonal release schedule. It’s possible for players to assume the role of a Troubleshooter, a citizen who’s been given the authority of the nation of Valhalla. To keep order, you’ll be able to draw on the talents of Albus and his colleagues, all of whom are capable of taking on that duty. You’ll be amazed by the wide range of character classes you can learn to play with this one.

Children of Zodiarcs

In Children of Zodiarcs, card decks are included into the game’s strategic gameplay, which is always pleasant. In addition, a physics-based dice system will allow you to apply stat enhancements to your skills. Since Square Enix and Cardboard Utopia are the publishers and developers of this RPG, you may rest assured that the gameplay is solid. Nahmi, the leader of the party you’ll control, is on a mission to take down Lumus’ corrupt and selfish ruling class. This game’s well-tuned fighting engine will quickly get you drawn in as you learn to customize each character’s signature powers and put them to use on the field.

The Banner Saga

If you’re a fan of Norse mythology, The Banner Saga is a must-have. It’s an epic narrative of two individuals doing everything they can to defend their caravan against an alien race that despises humanity, told across three games. The danger of defeat can have a significant impact on the well-being of your caravan, so use additional caution when hacking, slashing, and shield smashing.

Project X Zone

One of the better examples of playable fan service is seen in the Project X Zone games. You can mix and combine a variety of different units from various companies in the Nintendo 3DS games. This follows 2005’s Namco x Capcom. You’ll run against familiar foes in both games’ colorful worlds, and you’ll use absurd team combos to defeat their wicked plots. Fighting as Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima, as well as other well-known duos such as Ryu and Ken, never gets old.

Valkyria Chronicles

As a strategy RPG, Valkyria Chronicles uses active movement and third-person gunplay to inject some freshness into the genre. Gamers have lavished the series with acclaim and given it the attention it so rightly deserves because of these two key aspects. These mainstream games all have fascinating tales about unexpected soldiers who battle bravely to protect their friends, families, and homes from invading enemies. Fortunately.

Jeanne d’Arc

For historians, Joan of Arc is a formidable figure. During the Hundred Years’ War, she takes the stage in this PlayStation Portable strategy RPG. Forces that seek to retain an iron hold on the people of France confront Jeanne and her companions as they travel throughout the country. Jeanne d’Arc is an excellent PSP game that’s surprisingly good for its age. We can only hope for a console remaster or port in the future.

FRONT MISSION SERIES

FEBRUARY 24, 1995 was the release date.

G-CRAFT, SQUARE-ENIX ARE THE DEVELOPERS.

SUBSCRIBERS: Playstation, Nintendo DS

The Front Mission series, first created by G-Craft and Square-Enix, depicts a near-future battle in which robots known as wanzers (a combination of the German term “wanderpanzer”) are ubiquitous. As a military personnel of the Oceania Cooperative Union, Lloyd Clive, the player assumes the responsibility of investigating armaments plants on Huffman Island.

Cutscenes, turn-based combat, and fighting on an isometric grid system are all included in this SRPG classic. The people and the weapons they use make Front Mission unique. There is a body, left and right arms, and legs for each of the wanzer. As a result, they have their own health bar that may be adjusted to their needs. The sound design, plot, and gameplay are all top-notch. Keep in mind that not all of them are SRPGs, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on playing any of them.

TACTICS OGRE: LET US CLING TOGETHER

On October 6, 1995, the film was released.

Developers include Quest, Square Enix and Riverhill Soft.

Playstation, PlayStation Portable, Sega Saturn, Wii, Wii U, and Super Nintendo

Relembre Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PS), RPG tático que inovou o gênero - PlayStation Blast

Yasumi Matsuno is in charge, Hiroshi Minagawa is in charge of the art, Akihiko Yoshida is in charge of the character design, and Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata are in charge of the soundtrack. Due to the fact that most of its developers worked on Final Fantasy Tactics, this game is essentially a direct descendant of FFT.

Denim Powell and his older sister Kachua are caught in the middle of a power struggle that pits them against each other. The story contains many disturbing elements, such as ethnic cleansing, yet it is also very well written. Every aspect of the FFT formula is included in some form or another. The story, the combat, the music, and the replay value are all top-notch. SFC, PS, SS, and PSP versions have been released. The only FFT-like game you’ll ever want to play? This one. If you’re a newbie, I’d prefer the PSP version because it offers more extras.

VANDAL HEARTS

DATE OF DISTRIBUTION: October 25, 1996

COMPANY NAME/AGENCY: KONAMI, SYSTEM SACOM

PC, PlayStation, Sega Saturn.

Only in the eastern regions of the world were Sega Saturn and PC versions of Vandal Hearts available. Battles are really well executed tactically, and the plot is sufficiently complex. Ash Lambert, a young guy from the Sostegarian region, is at the center of a religious and military power struggle.

Critics at the time of the game’s release compared Vandal Hearts to the Shining Force series; however, I disagree. However, there is little exploration in the split motions, which contain numerous classes with a rock-paper-scissors paradigm. For an SPRG, the playability was solid. The artwork and soundtrack were excellent for the time period.

TACTICS OGRE: THE KNIGHT OF LODIS

FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2001 IS THE DATE OF ITS RELEASE

CREATOR: GOAL SETTING

ADVANCE GAME BOY PHYSICAL SYSTEMS

The GBA version of Tactics Ogre, released some years after the original, serves as a spin-off. After Square Enix acquired Quest, the developers of this game went on to create Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

Military man serving in the Lodis region of France is opposed to his country’s subjugation of people in other adjacent regions. Alphonse Loeher In the middle of the game, he is presented with a decision that could lead to a number of different outcomes, all of which involve time constraints. Tactics Ogre’s gameplay and other features, while not identical to the original, are nonetheless based on the strategy game.

DISGAEA SERIES

Date of Publication: 30th January 2003

THE DEVELOPER: NIS AMERICA, ENGINE SOFTWARE, PRISMA SYSTEMS

PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Portable 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and Android and iOS are all supported platforms.

Nippon Ichi Software’s Disgaea series has grown into a multi-generational franchise since its PS2 release, with numerous sequels, a television series, manga, and various spin-offs.

The original Disgaea tells the story of Laharl, a young man determined to restore his father’s throne and conquer the netherworld. Comedy, Prinnies, high levels of difficulty, and gameplay that includes group attacks, multiple strikes, and even launching opponents are just some of the things you’ll find in this game. In terms of humor and gameplay, the Disgaea series is a must-see for fans of the outlandish.

JEANNE D’ARC

RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 22nd, 2006

BEGINNER TO ADVANCED PROGRAMMER

Platforms: PSP

Jeanne d’Arc, a PSP game developed by Level 5 and published by Sony, was launched recently. Even though it is based on the true story of the Hundred Years’ War between England and France, it is an artistic interpretation of it.

Faffinities in games are subject to the rock, paper, scissors paradigm themselves. In combat, movement is essential since a “Burning Aura,” which acts as a form of team attack, allows you to inflict additional damage on a target that is already in front of you by striking them from behind. Defensively, a ‘Unified Guard’ is similar to a ‘Team Defense’ in that it surrounds the unit under attack. There is a big open world where you can purchase, sell, and fight random battles to develop your group, just like in FFT.

LUMINOUS ARC SERIES

FEBRUARY 8, 2007 is the release date.

TITLE: IMAGEEPOCH, INC.

NINTENDO DS, PlayStation Portable VITA

The Luminous Arc series began on the DS and continued through multiple sequels, all the way to the PS Vita, before being developed by the now-defunct Imageepoch, who rebranded as Mikage LLC.

Mua Luminous Arc Infinity [PSVita] trên Amazon Mỹ chính hãng 2022 | Fado

In the first Luminous Arc, we see the Luminous Church, which worships Zehaal, the god of light. The player assumes the role of Alf Erwin, a young boy, together with his younger brother Tio. For an SRPG where characters may fill their ‘Flash Gauge’ and even combine them into one large attack, the game’s gameplay is quite solid. Cutscenes and speech abound in this game, with a wide variety of characters and many of them voiced.

FINAL FANTASY TACTICS A2: GRIMOIRE OF THE RIFT

October 25, 2007 is the release date.

SQUARE ENIX is the developer.

PLATFORMS: NINTENDO DS

Luso Clemens, a young man from the modern world, is transported to the mythical country of Ivalice by a rare book. Despite the fact that this is a sequel, there isn’t much to tie the two stories together. As a stand-alone title, it can be enjoyed. Yuichi Murasawa, Ryoma Ito, and Hitoshi Sakimoto, who worked on the previous game, are all back for this sequel.

Final Fantasy elements such as clans, missions, equipment-based learning, and multiple vocations that fit in with the Ivalice environment all make a comeback in this sequel. In my opinion, the gameplay is still excellent, the plot is a little stale, and the music is still excellent, even if it borrows a little from FFXII (the composer).

GUNGNIR

May 19, 2011 is the release date.

STING ENTERTAINMENT

Platforms: PSP

Known as the ‘Swaying One’ in Norse mythology, Gungnir appears as a spear in computer games, particularly role-playing games, developed by Sting and published by Atlus.

As a strategic RPG, Gungnir differs from the others on this list in a few crucial ways. A ‘Tactics Gauge’ allows players to deploy Tactics points for a variety of purposes, including rearranging the order of play and utilizing specific tactics on the battlefield. Enhanced assaults can also be achieved by strategically placing characters.

MERCENARIES SAGA SERIES

APRIL 18TH, 2018 IS THE DATE OF RELEASE.

TITLE: RIDEON

NINTENDO SWITCH IS A PLATFORM.

Rideon Japan’s Mercenaries Saga is an ongoing series. Throughout the series, you play as a bunch of mercenaries, and you must make a decision that will effect the rest of the game in a variety of ways in each one. Like the Final Fantasy Tactics games, you can gain new skills, swap jobs, find riches on the map and engage in random battles.

With each subsequent release, the game’s graphics and mechanics improve. Because there are no vocal characters or magnificent cutscenes, it isn’t a high-end game like Final Fantasy Tactics, yet it has more in common with that game than most. Consider it a sort of indie Final Fantasy Tactics. ”

FELL SEAL: ARBITER’S MARK

APRIL 30, 2019 is the release date.

At 6 EYES STUDIO, the developer

The following platforms are supported: PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One.

Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark is a game developed by 6 Eyes Studios and released by 1C Entertainment that shows the influence of classics like Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics on the development team. A lot of attention is being paid to a tale in which corruption plays a significant part.

Tactics in the game are bolstered by the game’s diverse classes and skills, which allow players to approach enemies in many different ways. If you’re a hardcore completionist, the UI may use some work, and it can be tedious if you’re not careful. Here’s a review written by one of the site’s users that goes into great detail.

TACTICS V: OBSIDIAN BRIGADE

AUGUST 9TH, 2019 – RELEASE DATE

THE GAME STUDIOS AT FROM NOTHING

PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One

In terms of gameplay mechanics, Tactics V is similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, although the graphics are more reminiscent of a console generation or a style ubiquitous on the PC in the 1990s.

Because it’s an independent game, there may be some kinks in the amount of classes, personalization options, and other features, but it should still work. There are many advantages to this game, including the usage of individual turn order rather than a team-based attack.

WAR OF THE VISIONS: FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS

On November 14, 2019, the album will be out for purchase.

Square Enix’s GUMI is the developer.

APPLICATIONS: Android and iOS.

Square Enix created and released War of the Visions. Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Brave Exvius is a spin-off. It’s heavily influenced by the tactical RPG genre and FFT in particular. It uses a lot of Final Fantasy’s trademarks in its design. The plot revolves around the five nations of Lapis and their struggle. The youthful prince Mont is the starting character.

This game features a number of prominent Final Fantasy contributors. Mobileness is the only drawback. Pay-to-win and real-money gacha are examples of mobile gaming. There were accusations of unethical gacha system manipulation just a few months ago. This game deserves a release on consoles or PC at some point.

THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE TACTICS

FEBRUARY 4, 2020 is the release date.

BOOST XP INC., the game’s developer.

Playstation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One are all supported platforms.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, produced by BonusXP and En Masse Entertainment, also borrows heavily from FFT in terms of turn-order, elevation, and other such mechanics. A few XCOM-inspired aspects can be found in The Dark Crystal as well.

Jim Henson’s renowned Muppet movie is the inspiration for the Netflix series based on this story. There is a faction called the Geflings and another group named the Skeksis. Despite the established premise and being on Netlfix, the game itself does not have a big budget.

FAE TACTICS

PUBLISHING DATE: 31 July 2020

ENDLESS FLUFF GAMES is the studio behind this title.

Platforms: PC

Fae Tactics, a game developed by Endlessfluff Games and released by Humble Games that features cartoonish graphics and components that could be found in an animal raising simulation game such as Pocket Monsters, has earned its place on this list of games like Final Fantasy Tactics.

Fae Tactics trên Steam

Peony, a girl on a quest to find her mother, summons mystical creatures to defend the world from harm in this evocative story. If you enjoy games with more non-human characters, this game is for you.

TENDERFOOT TACTICS

The 21st of October, 2020, is the scheduled date of publication.

MADISON PATHE, MICHAEL BELL, BADRU, TAYLOR THOMAS AND ZOE VARTANIAN ARE THE DEVELOPERS OF THE PROJECT.

The following are the platforms available: P

Unlike other SRPGs, Tenderfoot Tactics emphasizes open-world exploration in its development by Badru, Michael Bell, Isa Hutchinson, Taylor Thomas, Zo Vartanian, and Madison Pathe at Ice Water Games. Fighting back against the Fog are many Goblins who have been granted magical powers.

In this game, there’s no random damage or missing pieces, thus the tactical rules are simple. You can use topography to your advantage in order to inflict more harm on your enemies. Avoid making rash decisions that could backfire later. A unique art style may or may not dissuade players from playing the game.

UNSUNG STORY

RELEASE DATE: DECEMBER 17, 2020

DEVELOPER: LITTLE ORBIT

PLATFORMS: PC

As a Kickstarter campaign began in 2014, Unsung Story was born. A lack of funding led to the initial developer, Playdek, quitting the project. We are grateful that Little Orbit has taken over development of the game. The game is still in its infancy.

Let me quote right from their website:

Final Fantasy Tactics’ spiritual sequel, Unsung Story, takes place in a world where spells are cast as songs and a 77-year conflict has weakened the foundations of magic. ‘ In order to save Lasfaria, assemble a squad to work backward in time from the last fight.”
