In the Monster Hunter series, which has been around for more than a decade, big boss encounters with fearsome beasts have always been at the heart of the gameplay.

In spite of the fact that Monster Hunter’s popularity is derived on its varied and engaging combat, which is dependant on the weapon you’re using and the monster you’re battling, I believe most fans will agree that there’s a lot more to the game than meets the eye.

Monster Hunter: World’s most recent release may leave you undecided of what to buy next.

To that end, we’ve gathered some of the top games that satisfy players’ cravings for monster slaying in the same way as the popular series.

Keep checking back as we’ll be adding more titles to this list in the near future.

Dauntless

Systems: Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch

It has been argued that Dauntless has taken too much inspiration from MH without adding anything new to the table. On closer study, though, you’ll realize that the game adapts the MH model to make it more approachable for a wide range of players.

Dauntless | Download and Play for Free - Epic Games Store

For starters, it’s free to play, which makes it easy for anyone to join in on the fun. With its brighter colors, adversaries and environments show out more clearly in the cartoonish aesthetic style.

While out hunting, you’ll find yourself exploring bite-sized landscapes, which will help you locate creatures more quickly. For now, the gameplay is focused on killing big animals with various elemental attacks in order to improve and produce new gear.

Devil May Cry 5

PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

The inclusion of Devil May Cry 5 and a few other Capcom titles on this list may come as a shock to some. It’s less stat-focused than Monster Hunter, but both games have fascinating combat systems where timing your dodges and attacks is critical to success.

Three selectable characters, each with a distinct playstyle, make DMC 5 distinguish apart from the rest of the series. It’s not as diverse as MHW’s 14 weapon kinds, but there’s still a good chance you’ll connect with at least one of the characters.

You’ll face enormous, demonic monsters in the DMC series’ challenging boss encounters.

Toukiden 2

PC and PlayStation 4

Action-RPG Toukiden 2 is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Toukiden: Age of Demons. Oni, gigantic monsters that roam the open environment, are the focus of the game.

Combat in MH is a lot slower paced, but it’s also far more open to experimentation when it comes to building your own playstyle.

Toukiden 2 is unique in that it does not require any transitions or loading screens while moving between sections. Whether you’re looking to improve your current gear or discover new abilities, the overall experience creates an engaging gameplay cycle.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Activate the program:

Breath of the Wild and Monster Hunter have a lot in common in terms of gameplay, despite the fact that they are structured extremely differently. There are a variety of weaponry at Link’s disposal, from bows and swords to clubs and axes.

Another feature of the game is the ability to make your own meals, which can grant you different benefits such as enhanced stamina or resistance to certain elements.

There aren’t many boss fights in the game save Calamity Ganon, but defeating each of the four Divine Beasts is like defeating Diablos or the Pink Rathian in terms of difficulty.

Much of the challenge in MH comes from dealing with a wide variety of monsters and habitats, which is also present in BOTW.

Horizon Zero Dawn

PlayStation 4

Some of Horizon Zero Dawn’s gameplay is identical to that of MH. As Aloy, you must show your worth to the Nora tribe, a group of primitive hunter-gatherers in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by mechanical animals referred to as the Machines.

Story-heavy though it may be, encountering the machines makes gameplay feel more like a hunt than it does in the previous game. With only a wooden bow at her disposal, Aloy has no hope of defeating the beasts.

Things begin to open up as you progress with new tools and upgrades, and Aloy is able to assess adversary weaknesses, construct distraction gadgets, and even hack into some computers as you gain experience.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Systems: Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch

The Witcher 3 has been lauded for its ability to present a good story with 36 alternative endings while simultaneously allowing players to roam a large open world. Geralt of Rivia, a hunter who has been trained since infancy to track down and defeat creatures from other worlds, is your character in the game.

Geralt has a wide range of weaponry and magical abilities at his disposal to aid you in your quest. In addition to the tale, the game has exotic monster hunts in which players travel to other places in pursuit of valuable animals, many of which are just as formidable as those in MH.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen

Systems: Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch

Another fantasy-themed Capcom action RPG, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is situated in the same world. You take on the role of the Arisen, a new character who must take down a dragon. Although this dragon appears to be a typical dragon, legends say it is responsible for a variety of supernatural occurrences around the world.

There are various classes in the game, each with their own set of tools and abilities that influence your strategy in battle. While the Strider can climb onto a monster’s body and target certain body sections, the Fighter can focus on causing damage with fast hack-and-slash strikes.

Pawns, like palico friends in MH, will also join your team as you go through the game’s storyline.

God Eater 3

Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC

In the battle for the best creature slaying franchise, the God Eater series has undoubtedly been the most successful. A plethora of changes have been made to several of the game’s systems in God Eater 3 while retaining the series’ signature fluid hack’n’slash combat, which was first introduced in 2010.

GOD EATER 3 on Steam

Searching for Aragami (huge, hazardous monsters) in different places is the goal of the quests. As a result, you’re equipped with an assortment of massively overpowered weapons that can be further enhanced to improve their damage output.

The game focuses less on tracking monsters and more on keeping you in the middle of the action.

Shadow of the Colossus

PlayStation 4

It’s a remaster of the original PS2 game of the same name, and it now has graphics that can compete with the best of the current generation.

Wander is a young man who is entrusted with battling sixteen gigantic beings known as colossi, in order to bring back life to a girl named Mono..

Some regions and trinkets can be found, but there isn’t much to do outside of the main story.

Even while combat isn’t a major focus of the game, the player must overcome each of the colossi in order to face off against one of MH’s Elder Dragons.

Dauntless (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)

The free-to-play Monster Hunter clone Dauntless comes the closest. For the most part, you’ll notice a more stylish and lively look, as well as the fact that it’s completely free. There isn’t as much variation in the game because it’s open source and not created by a large corporation. More than two dozen monsters, referred to as “behemoths” in the game, can be encountered, and there are six different sorts of weapons to use against them. Dauntless is more concerned with depth than breadth when it comes to its substance, so those statistics may not seem like much. Multi-step hunts necessitate extensive gear-making, as well as a complex elemental armor system. It’s basically a scaled-down version of Monster Hunter’s core mechanics.

When it comes to cross-platform play, you can rest assured that Dauntless is fully compatible with every other platform. You don’t need to spend any money to play this game with your pals if they have a gadget that it will run on. And if you’re worried about the microtransactions (which this game obviously needs to earn money, after all), they’re completely unnecessary. There are no functional or content-locking goods available for purchase with real money.

Attack on Titan 2 (PS4, Xbox One, Switch)

Attack on Titan 2 is a fast-paced, high-energy action game that pits you against a slew of gigantic adversaries, regardless of whether you’re a fan of the anime or not. As a Titan hunter, your primary prey is titans, who often take the form of enormous humans yet are unquestionably not human. Your character is outfitted with the show’s trademark omnidirectional gear, giving him the mobility of Spider-Man to zip about landscapes and achieve the angles necessary to bring down a giant with his blades. Reverse Muso: You’re the vulnerable mobs to your foes in this game. You can, however, change the tides and take down animals 10 times your size thanks to your improved mobility.

The amount of content in Attack on Titan 2 is staggering. Another Mode lets you take on specific missions as members of the main cast; Inferno Mode ups the difficulty after completing the story; and Town Life lets you interact with the cast and take on challenge missions and craft new gear. The story mode takes you through the first two seasons and only features your own custom character. Several competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes are also available. Attack on Titan 2 is a fast, vicious, and all-around enjoyable experience.

MONSTER HUNTER RISE

Monster Hunter World’s successor, Rise, is the closest thing to the original on the market, but Rise is so much more. “The tactical, hard combat that made Monster Hunter World so enjoyable and removes the fat to make its first few hours more accessible,” says our Monster Hunter Rise review. Palamutes and Wirebugs, new airborne movements and special weapon assaults, are two of the game’s many new additions.

It’s not only that Wirebugs make heavy weapons easier to use that makes Monster Hunter Rise seem fresh and exciting. New and returning monsters, some based on Japanese folklore and mythology, populate the game. The Tetranadon’s sumo wrestling slaps or the returning Mizutsune bubbles are only two examples of the monster’s distinctive fighting tactics. It’s a no-brainer to play Monster Hunter Rise if you’re looking for more of the same high-quality hunting experience that World provided.

MONSTER HUNTER STORIES 2: WINGS OF RUIN

In our review of Monster Hunter Stories 2, Wings of Ruin, we highlight exactly how hard this game strives to win over fans of the original Monster Hunter titles. Although there are instances when this game feels like a cartoon, there are other genuine efforts to make it feel like a Monster Hunter game.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin HD Wallpaper | Background Image | 1920x1080

You and your army of monsties (tamed monsters) ride out into the vast wilderness, completing quests for locals in each town, fighting monsters, and making new equipment for your character as you go through the wilderness. The ability to add additional abilities to your monstie by splicing its genes is an excellent way to offer your main monstie a new skill, such as the ability to breathe fire. Even if you’re unsure about the game’s cartoonish aesthetic, you should still give Stories 2 a shot.

TOUKIDEN 2

Defeating gigantic demons known as Oni is the goal in Toukiden 2 if you want to save humanity from oblivion. To put it another way, think of Monster Hunter, but instead of wyverns and dinosaurs, imagine the monsters of Japanese medieval folklore.

To tell Monster Hunter from Toukiden is like attempting to tell a Rathalos from a Rathian by looking at the similarities and differences between the two games. Hunting enormous snotty creatures, bringing pals along, and upgrading weapons and gear with resources from defeated foes are all things you’ll find in both games.

Toukiden: Kiwami, the upgraded PC version of the original Toukiden, is available. However, Toukiden 2 is a superior option because it was designed from the ground up to run on a PC. Is the first open-world game in the series, making it a sort of Monster Hunter: World for Toukiden fans.

DARK SOULS III

Monster Hunter: World has nothing in common with Dark Souls III, despite some spurious comparisons. But give us a chance.

Dark Souls III, a worthy competitor to Monster Hunter: World, including dragon slaying, plunging strikes, and a wide variety of blunts and blades. After all, the series’ difficult boss fights are well-known. Like in Monster Hunter, you have the option to make weapons out of the lizards’ tails.

However, Dark Souls III’s focus on worldbuilding, atmosphere, and storytelling sets it apart. Dark Souls III’s progression isn’t represented by a carved-up hide worn as a horrific suit of armor, but rather by the campfires that serve as stepping stones into each of the game’s locales. This time around, there is more emphasis on learning to conquer locales, and the author’s goal is to connect the dots between personalities, locations, and the descriptions of items.

However, returning to a location with an updated blade and slicing through foes with the ease of munching on a piece of cooked meat gives you the same sensation of accomplishment. Before major battles, you’ll still need to seek for goods, farm for them, and gather minerals to improve your equipment. You might mistake it for the terrifying Odogaron from Monster Hunter: World if you look at it the wrong way.

NIOH

Dark Souls, but with a mission-based structure, greater repetition, and plenty of gruesome enemies to hack off your limbs with. That’s Nioh. If pressed, we’d say it falls somewhere between Dark Souls and Monster Hunter: World in terms of difficulty.

As far as bosses are concerned, Nioh is a little more restrained than he should be. Nioh, in contrast to the Dark Souls series, tends to provide players humanoid bosses to fight, with the main differences being their size and attack kinds (the less said about the centipede boss the better). There’s no denying that these are some of the most difficult boss fights in the game. Your samurai fighting style and your usage of support equipment will have to be honed if you are to advance. It’s possible to outnumber your opponent by recruiting an online acquaintance.

Nioh’s Monster Hunter-inspired roots may be seen in the abundance of things to do at all times. It hurls tasks at you like a hunter hurling tranq bombs at a ferocious beast in an attempt to put it to sleep. In addition to tasks, you’ll have to deal with a slew of other things like stats, talents, weapons, armor, postures, and what have you. Those who enjoy customizing their gear down to the last detail and preparing for battle the way a true hunter should will find much to enjoy here.
