Do you share our enthusiasm for RPGs? If so, you should check out our top upcoming role-playing games of 2021.

The best role-playing games can be incredibly time-consuming, with many requiring hundreds of hours to beat.

For many players, that’s too much time to commit, which is why role-playing games (RPGs) are among the genre’s highest percentage of games in the “someday” pile.

When will things finally improve? Not likely, considering that some of the most visually stunning role-playing games ever made are coming out in 2022.

This article features a chronological list of the best role-playing games scheduled for release in 2022 and beyond.

Check back later for updates, and let us know if we forgot any of your favorite new role-playing games!

The Origins of Role-Playing Games

The roots of role-playing video games can be found in the original, non-digital tabletop versions. When it was first released in 1974, Dungeons & Dragons was a huge hit that introduced role-playing games to a wide audience.

In roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons, each player creates a unique character with their own set of statistics. Their abilities in different domains are determined by these characteristics, such as physical toughness and mental acuity. The players embark on an adventure under the guidance of a Dungeon Master who directs the action and plot of the game.

Each player character has a different physical make-up, which influences how they respond to campaign obstacles like fending off monster attacks and picking locks. Players gain levels and experience as they play, allowing them to improve their current abilities and possibly pick up new ones as they go.

Electronic role-playing games (RPGs) following the same formula became more widespread as PC and console gaming became increasingly popular. Video games, of course, have the distinct advantage of having the programming handle all of this, rather than the players having to roll dice to determine statistics and rely on a Dungeon Master to progress the plot.

What Defines an RPG?

Now that we know where role-playing games came from, how do we define one? To be classified as an RPG, a game must meet the following criteria:

  1. There needs to be a system where your character grows more powerful on the inside as you progress through the game. Usually this means gaining a higher maximum health, more experience points, or better attributes.
  2. Your character’s abilities should influence the fight to some degree. This could imply that your character’s strength or agility plays a role in the amount of damage they deal. No credit is given for input mastery or item-enhanced combat.
  3. Your character should be equipped with a wide range of weapons, armor, spells, healing items, and other tools. Puzzle-related items are excluded from this.

A role-playing game (RPG) must have these three components at a minimum; some RPGs may have others as well. Let’s put this into practice by looking at two games and deciding whether or not they meet the criteria for role-playing games.

Fallout 3

After escaping the nuclear fallout in a vault, the protagonist of Fallout 3 ventures out into the nuclear wasteland. Character development entails investing skill points in a number of different attributes. You gain skill points to allocate as you level up as a result of completing quests and gaining experience. The first condition is met by this.

Both first- and third-person perspectives are supported in Fallout 3, but your character’s statistics will have a significant impact on how you fight. How much damage you can inflict with a sword, for instance, depends on your strength stat and the melee weapons skill. This also satisfies the second criterion, as your combat effectiveness is determined by statistics in addition to your own decisions and skill in the heat of battle.

Finally, Fallout 3 features a wide selection of weapons, medicines, and protective gear. The third criterion is met because the player is free to pick any one of these and very few of them are essential.

So, yes, Fallout 3 is an RPG.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Despite widespread agreement that the Zelda games are role-playing games, it is clear from the above that this is not the case.

Completing dungeons in Ocarina of Time rewards Link with hearts, but this is not a true progression system. While other characters gain experience and levels as they defeat enemies and complete quests, Link does not.

As for your second point, Zelda’s combat is entirely dependent on your actions, though a better sword can be obtained by completing a specific quest. Second, you can’t view or alter any specific statistics or attributes in Zelda, so that’s not a feature.

Last but not least, there are many different items in Ocarina of Time, but you’ll need almost all of them to complete the game. The third point doesn’t apply to Zelda because there isn’t a wide selection of weapons like there is in Fallout.

Ocarina of Time is not a role-playing game. The majority of Zelda games are classified as action-adventure titles due to their blend of adventure game elements (such as puzzles and story) and action game elements (such as combat and movement).

Western RPGs vs. Japanese RPGs

The Bard’s Tale and other early PC RPGs were distinct from later console RPGs like Dragon Quest. As time went on, people stopped referring to role-playing games (RPGs) by their respective platforms and instead began to categorize them as either “Western RPGs” or “Japanese RPGs” (JRPGs).

This is a key distinction, so let’s investigate further.

Western RPGs

More freedom of choice is found in Western RPGs, so named because they are typically created by teams in the West. You get to decide how and in what order you complete quests most of the time.

You get to shape a “blank slate” version of yourself at the beginning of the game when you get to create your own character. Western role-playing games may feature extensive dialogue trees where the player can affect the course of the story by making ethical or immoral decisions.

In addition, Western role-playing games have a more somber tone than their Japanese counterparts and typically feature older characters. The majority of the time, their battles occur in real time on the main screen.

The Mass Effect games, Skyrim, and The Witcher 3 are all examples of popular Western role-playing video games.

Japanese RPGs

There are some significant ways in which Japanese RPGs diverge from their Western counterparts. Most protagonists in JRPGs have more charisma, but you won’t have much control over their appearance. Japanese role-playing games typically have a more linear plot than their Western counterparts, rather than an open world where players can complete quests in any order they like.

The way they fight is also very different. Instead of fighting in real time, most Japanese role-playing games feature turn-based combat in which the player makes decisions from a menu. Rather than display enemies in the field, many JRPGs, especially older ones, feature random battle encounters on a separate screen.

Characters in Japanese role-playing games tend to be younger, and it’s not uncommon to take an entire party on your adventures (as opposed to venturing out solo, as is the norm in Western RPGs).

Final Fantasy, Persona, and Chrono Trigger are just a few examples of well-known Japanese role-playing game series.

Sub-Genres of RPGs

You have gained an understanding of what an RPG is and the differences between the two primary categories. But that’s not all there is to be confused about RPGs; there are also sub-genres. Some of these have been alluded to in passing, but let’s look at some examples quickly so you’re familiar with them.

Action RPGs are a subgenre of role-playing games in which battles are a major focus. Video games in which your in-game actions have a significant impact on the outcome of a fight include Skyrim.

Shooters with role-playing game mechanics are called “role-playing shooters.” In Borderlands, for instance, you can customize your character’s attributes as you gain experience.

Online role-playing games (RPGs) like World of Warcraft support a large number of players at once; these games are known as “massively multiplayer online role-playing games” (or “MMORPGs”). Unlike single-player games, these keep going even when you aren’t using them.

RPGs with a tactical focus combine traditional role-playing game elements like story and character development with those of turn-based or real-time strategy games. Games like Disgaea and Fire Emblem are examples of such franchises.

These are just some of the most well-known examples of genre-blending, but there are many others.

6 Types of Role-Playing Games

Numerous subgenres of role-playing games exist, each created in a unique setting and employing its own distinct gameplay aesthetic. Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) and Western RPGs initially diverged greatly due to technological barriers and cultural differences. As a beloved JRPG, Final Fantasy ranks among the best. The majority of MMORPGs now have a worldwide release.

  1. First, role-playing games (RPGs) for video game consoles: Following the success of RPGs on mainframe computers in the 1970s, video game consoles entered the market. The Atari 2600 was the pioneering console back in 1982, and now there are dozens of choices, including Xbox, Nintendo, and Playstation. Modern game consoles are capable of running AAA titles with numerous optional minigames and quests.
  2. Single-player role-playing games have the player experience the game from a singular vantage point and typically feature character creation screens where the player can give their in-game character unique traits. The best role-playing games allow players to take different routes through the story, making each playthrough unique.
  3. Third, MMORPGs combine elements of both MMOs and RPGS to create a world where players can engage in epic showdowns and battles. Popular examples of this genre of online role-playing game include Fortnite, World of Warcraft, and League of Legends. Gameplay takes place in real time, allowing players to demonstrate their agility in combat. Players in a cooperative massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) work together to defeat enemies.
  4. Fourth, action role-playing games put the spotlight on combat rather than character development or plot. The Legend of Zelda, Dark Souls, and Mass Effect are all examples of action role-playing games with well-received combat systems.
  5. Sandbox role-playing games, which emphasize world exploration, are the most time-consuming to complete. The Elder Scrolls, Disco Elysium, and the Fallout games by Bethesda Softworks and Interplay Entertainment are all examples of role-playing video games in this genre.
  6. Strategy games like chess and tabletop war games like Risk are major influences on tactical role-playing games.
  7. The seventh type of role-playing games is known as “roguelikes,” and it all started with the game Rogue in 1980. Randomized content, permanent death of the main character, and dungeon crawler characters are all staples of the roguelike RPG genre.

8 Examples of RPG Games

Popular role-playing games typically feature multiple paths through the story, interesting characters you can customize extensively, and exciting fights. The RPGs’ storylines should branch in various ways depending on the player’s performance in combat and the choices they make along the way.

  1. First, there’s Dragon Age: Origins, where you can play as a rogue, warrior, or mage and enroll in the Grey Wardens. You battle the Archdemon as you make your way through the fantastic world of Ferelden.
  2. The Elder Scrolls 2 is an action role-playing game that primarily features open world gameplay and battles. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are just a few of its iterations.
  3. Thirdly, Deus Ex is a science fiction role-playing game set in the year 2052, when multiple corporations are vying for global dominance.
  4. Final Fantasy is a video game series developed and published in Japan by Square Enix. New protagonists, settings, and storylines are introduced in each installment.
  5. Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity is a grim fantasy game in which you play as a Watcher with the ability to communicate with the dead. Numerous playthroughs are possible due to the game’s flexible character creation options.
  6. BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place during a time of relative calm in the galaxy. To play, you select a single hero and assume the role of either a Jedi Knight or a Sith Warrior, representing either the Galactic or the Sith Empire. The combat is crucial, but so are the personalities and the freedom of choice.
  7. Wasteland is an open-world science-fiction role-playing game developed and published by Electronic Arts in 1988, with subsequent sequels. With each new installment, the game, which draws heavily from traditional role-playing games, expands in scope and complexity.
  8. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an open-world action role-playing game that tells the story of Geralt of Rivia and was the basis for the hit Netflix series The Witcher. This Polish RPG has its origins in the early days of personal computers.

Role-playing games, like many other video game subgenres, have a diverse fan base. There’s a role-playing game (RPG) for everyone, from combat fans to world-building enthusiasts.

In Starfield, players will embark on an epic open-world adventure in space, much like in previous Bethesda RPGs like Skyrim.

When it will be released: Not Yet Determined

Available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One X/S.

After acquiring Piranha Bytes in May of this year, THQ Nordic has started developing a new version of the 2001 action role-playing game Gothic.

THQ Nordic appears to be focusing on revamping the game’s visuals and gameplay instead of the story for the remake.

You take on the role of a convict in a mining colony who is tasked with locating a secret society of magicians called the Order of the Magicians of Fire.

THQ has released a playable teaser available for free on Steam if you’re interested in giving the game a try.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel

Date of Publication: To Be Announced

Nintendo Switch is the platform.

In what may be the biggest surprise of E3, Nintendo revealed that development on a follow-up to 2017’s Breath of the Wild has begun.

The reveal trailer suggests the next installment will keep the same visual style as BOTW but have a much darker tone.

The camera cuts from an interior shot of Hyrule Castle’s ascent to an exterior shot of Ganondorf’s reanimated corpse.

Already, fans are drawing parallels between the new game and Majora’s Mask, another Zelda classic with mature themes and motifs.

Crimson Desert

Players assume the role of a mercenary and must complete missions and find other mercenaries to join their cause in order to survive the game’s war-torn world.

The additional support will be greatly appreciated, as the game’s open-world regions are said to feature challenging weather conditions.

The Elder Scrolls VI

Date of Publication: To Be Announced

Release Dates and System Requirements: TBA

There have been periodic reminders that Elder Scrolls VI is in development, despite Bethesda’s current focus being on Elder Scrolls: Online.

However, there has been no news since December of 2018, so hopefully Bethesda will have something to unveil before the year is out.

The announcement trailer for ES6 showed a mountainous northern province, leading some to speculate that it will be set in Skyrim’s neighbor, High Rock.

The ongoing conflict with the Thalmor is also said to be a potential plot point in the game.

Avowed

Date of Availability Unknown

Microsoft Windows and Xbox X/S

Obsidian is hard at work on a brand-new intellectual property called Avowed. It’s a first-person role-playing game set in a fantasy world known as Eora.

The player assumes the role of a mysterious hero who fights with a sword and casts spells by making stylized motions with their hands.

Since role-playing games are Obsidian’s specialty, their eagerness to create a new one is hardly surprising. We’re talking about games like Fallout: New Vegas, Knights of the Old Republic 2, and Pillars of Eternity here.

Avowed has a darker tone thematically than anything else we’ve seen Obsidian explore, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do with that.

Diablo Immortal

  • Creators: Blizzard and NetEase
  • Blizzard Entertainment is the publisher.
  • Multi-Platform: Android, iOS, and PC
  • Dissemination: June 2, 2022

The entire history of Diablo is fascinating, but if you recall, it was Diablo Immortal that nearly ended it all. As a result of the negative reaction to the announcement, some BlizzCon attendee asked if it was a joke. Because Diablo IV isn’t out yet, I can assure you that there was a lot of it.

The story between Diablo II and III is the “untold story” of the title. Diablo’s minions are plotting to seize power now that the main archangel is dead and pieces of the worldstone are scattered across the land, and if you couldn’t tell already, it’s your job to stop them. In order to survive and save the world, you must battle Diablo’s hordes of minions.

Or at least put it off until later…

Based on what we know so far, we’re following a cast of characters that mysteriously appeared in this fantastical setting.

Our band of heroes start their uphill battle to cleanse the world with a legend telling of warriors coming in to stop Chaos and its legion. Despite taking place in the same universe as the original game, this is not a remake. Instead, it’s a brand-new plot that draws inspiration from the original game’s design. There may be some recognizable elements, but the overall tone is much darker than the original creators intended.

Players could quickly move around buildings while fighting off waves of zombies, thanks to the game’s parkour-inspired movement system. Contrarily, its sequel has been in the works for a considerable amount of time. We’re still waiting for the game, and we’re crossing our fingers that we’ll get it this year. So far as we can tell, this sequel takes place well over a decade after the events of the original game, when the worldwide zombie pandemic has had devastating effects.

Not only do the walking dead lurk in the surrounding countryside, but there are also competing groups of citizens within the city limits, making Players one of the most dangerous places in the world. The game’s mechanics will be largely unchanged from the previous entry. Developers have said that there will be many meaningful decisions to make throughout the game’s campaign, so we’re curious to see just how far those decisions will ripple in the final product. You can now probably string together a series of attacks while parkouring and fighting your way across the open world.

Guerrilla Games’ Horizon: Zero Dawn, an open-world action role-playing game starring a young woman named Aloy, was one of the most talked-about PlayStation 4 exclusives. Large mechanical beasts play the role of top predators in this series, which takes place in a dystopian future where humanity has fallen. Small, isolated tribes are all that’s left of humanity now, and they’re constantly on the lookout for these mechanical beasts. Aloy’s main journey in the first book is to learn the truth about her origins and why she was cast out at birth.

In this new game, Aloy appears intent on venturing out into the Pacific coast’s more remote western regions. The news that a new plague is wiping out both people and plants reaches her here. To save humanity once more, players will have to overcome new mechanical enemies and hostile human factions that have figured out how to control these beasts. Horizon Zero Dawn was originally released for the PlayStation 4, and is now also available for the PlayStation 5. However, you may recall that the PC version of the game was released a few years after the PS4 version. There have been no public announcements to that effect regarding this sequel, but it might be worth keeping an eye out for.

The massive FromSoftware studio is responsible for creating the Souls video game series. The latest installment, Elden Ring, is the latest success in a series that is both challenging and widely played. Here we have another brand-new action RPG in the works from director Hidetaka Miyazaki. In a similar vein, the addition of acclaimed author George R.R. Martin to develop the game’s backstory has piqued the interest of many players. A Song of Ice and Fire, the source material for the award-winning premium HBO series Game of Thrones, was written by George R.R. Martin.

The two have released a video game with a new fantasy setting and gameplay reminiscent of Souls. FromSoftware, the studio responsible for the Souls games, has promised challenging combat, but the game will also include features not seen in its predecessors, such as the ability to ride mounts. Throughout the campaign, you’ll be able to explore freely, have more leeway in how you complete objectives, and face increasingly difficult game mechanics.

Conclusion

The RPG genre has evolved over time and merged with other types of games, making it incredibly diverse. RPG elements can be found in a wide variety of games, but true RPGs are easy to spot once you know what to look for. If you prefer games that don’t place as much emphasis on your raw physical ability, these are a fantastic choice.

Why not explore some other genres of video games that you are unfamiliar with?
