With Payday and Payday 2 creator Ulf Anderson at the helm, GTFO promises to be a must-have for fans of competitive four-player co-op shooters.

His new studio, 10 Chambers Collective, uses the same formula as the Payday games but places the player in a terrifying and disturbing world. Therefore, GTFO is an excellent Steam cooperative experience for up to four players. If that doesn’t get your attention, read on for more details.

Get the F*** Out

Get the f*** out is shorthand for “GTFO.” A person who is annoying, stupid, or trolling is being insulted. Another meaning is something that is not wanted at all, such as spam or sexually explicit material.

GTFO can be written with either upper- or lowercase letters, just like any other common acronym. “gtfo” is typically more chill than “GTFO,” but that depends on the situation. The phrase “shut the f*** up” (or “STFU”) is a close relative of this term. You can use either term interchangeably depending on the context.

The Origin of GTFO

The actual phrase “get the f*** out” has been popular in the United States since the late 20th century, making numerous film and literary appearances. Internet relay chat became popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, but the acronym version didn’t appear until around this time.

Later, it made its way to Reddit and Twitter, two of today’s most popular social media platforms. As an insult, “GTFO” was first defined on Urban Dictionary in December 2002, with the example “GTFO & STFU, noob.”

This definition sheds light on the gaming community, one place where these insults frequently appeared online. The widespread adoption of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) like World of Warcraft and Everquest in the 2000s led to millions of players casually hurling these terms at one another.

Internet “Spaces” and GTFO

What does “out” refer to in the phrase “get the f*** out”? The acronym alludes to the concept of “spaces” on the web, which are virtual meeting places for users. These areas could be anything from a comment section on Reddit to a Twitter conversation to an entire website. GTFO can sound very harsh, so you’ll hear it more often in communities where users prefer to remain anonymous, like Reddit or stan Twitter.

The acronym is not meant to be taken literally, in most cases. The most common reason for its use is to strongly disagree with or be angry at another person’s words. In online contexts, however, “GTFO” could mean that the user wants the other person to leave the thread or website immediately.

That’s why a “GTFO” message usually results in a pile-on, where a bunch of people all at once express their disapproval or anger at the original poster. It’s also a common rejoinder to people who don’t add anything to the discussion, like spammers or trolls.

Getting Out, Fast

Do not fret. The acronym “GTFO” isn’t just for ending trivial online debates. The acronym “GTFO” is commonly used in informal conversations to indicate the urgency of leaving a given location.

If you’re sick of your job, you might tell a friend in a text message something like, “I need to gtfo.” This statement suggests that you are unhappy in your current position and are eager to find alternative employment. You might say “Hey, gtfo as soon as you can” if you’re in a hurry to get your friend to leave. What you’re saying is to have them get out of the house as soon as they can.

You can also use GTFO to express your utter lack of belief in what the other person is saying. For a long time now, the phrase “get out of here” has stood in for “something shocking or crazy,” and this meaning has carried over to the acronym form. You could send someone the message “Wow! GTFO, that’s amazing!” if they told you they got a promotion. This message, which at first glance appears negative, is actually a constructive reaction to welcome news.

How to Use GTFO

Simply typing “GTFO” before your message will ensure that your audience understands exactly what you mean. If you want to avoid coming across as rude or hostile, you should limit your use of this acronym.

Some examples of GTFO usage are as follows;

  • “Get the hell out of here!”
  • “GTFO. Please do not spam this forum.
  • I had to get the hell out of there immediately.
  • “Dude! Holy crap, that’s insane.

Where Will GTFO Be Set and What’s the Story?

That’s intriguing, because we don’t know much else about the story’s plot.

The asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs 66 million years ago created the Chicxulub Crater, where this event is said to take place. Researchers found it, established a camp nearby, and began drilling into its depths, only to discover that something horrifying had been let loose.

Regarding your function, all we can say for sure is that you play as prisoners who have been ordered to enter the dungeon and retrieve some sort of artifact. You see, the issue is that you aren’t alone in this.

The crater/asteroid is teeming with bizarre monsters that look like something out of The Last of Us. So far, we’ve learned about a few distinct varieties, ranging from the plain and ordinary to the unusual and powerful… or simply the larger and more combat-ready.

The earliest levels we’re aware of take place in what appears to be an abandoned mine, its various sections separated by doors. It’s never that easy, though; different regions may present unique dangers, have varying degrees of visibility (or even none), and feature unique loot that could prove useful along the way.

World Premiere Gameplay Trailer:

This is clearly not a place for the faint of heart, as the landscape is quite dark and freaking terrifying. The silver lining of being absolutely petrified is that you can bring along your pals.

GTFO Gameplay

It’s a stark contrast to the fast-paced action of Payday, which can also begin slowly but usually heats up very quickly. Instead, you and your party will spend most of your time trying to remain undetected in shadowy passages long enough to approach the sleeping enemies and bash their heads in. This style of play is much more methodical and calculated, which is likely to win over more serious enthusiasts.

The primary goal is to recover an artifact, which you must first locate with terminals.

However, it’s not quite as simple as it sounds, and you’ll often have to follow a trail of breadcrumbs to reach your goal. It’s not as simple as it seems at first because you’ll inevitably wake up a monster and unleash a horde upon yourself.

You do have some options in your current setup, including a wide range of weapons and utilities. Foam can be used to trap monsters in place, and foam grenades can be thrown at doors to keep them shut (this is especially useful because the monsters can break down the doors).

The classic sentry turret can be useful if you need to keep an eye on several different areas at once.

If for no other reason than having to pass through security doors whose unlocking protocol triggers an alarm, you will eventually get ganked.

I don’t understand why a door would be made that way, but that’s not the point here. In either case, you and your partners will need to stand in designated areas and trace lines to fill an “unlock” bar before the door will unlock.

When you activate the final alarm for the artifact, the entire map will rush at you at once, so the title actually makes sense in the final moments.

When Will GTFO Come Out?

The game is out now, albeit in Early Access, which is great news for fans of scary video games. It’s currently available for purchase on Steam for $34.99.

I’m well aware that many of you have had bad experiences with Early Access games. However, I don’t think we have much to worry about given the track record of the developers and our prior experiences. I’m curious to see where it goes and intend to buy a copy for myself as soon as I can talk some of my friends out of being chicken and into giving it a try.

The exact date of the full release is unknown at this time. Since the full release schedule hasn’t been determined, all we can do is wait (and play the game, of course!).

GTFO Rumors

We don’t know what’s next for GTFO, but the creators have promised us futuristic workplaces and laboratories. Since the majority of this complex is dedicated to scientific research, it makes sense that this would be the case.

What’s intriguing is how they’ll appear; will there be more darkness, or will they create a much brighter environment?

Final Thoughts

The gameplay and aesthetics of GTFO look very interesting, borrowing elements from both Payday and The Last of Us. There isn’t much of a story at the moment, but the missions are fun to play again and again.

I’m glad to see that GTFO is developing into an intriguing 4-player horror co-op, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the developers take us next.
